‘The Simpsons’ Kills Off Long-Time Character After 34 Years

The Simpsons has never shied away from death, with several characters having been killed off over the show’s 37 seasons, and now there is another long-serving character to add to the list.

On Sunday’s (November 16) episode, the citizens of Springfield said goodbye to Alice Glick, the First Church of Springfield organist who has been a part of the animated comedy since 1991. The late Cloris Leachman originally voiced the character before Tress MacNeille took over the role in subsequent appearances.

During Sunday’s episode, Reverend Lovejoy was delivering a sermon when Alice collapsed onto her organ, per TVLine. While Lovejoy initially played it off as Alice being overzealous, it was later revealed that she had died, causing shock throughout the congregation. Principal Skinner later held a memorial for Alice at Springfield Elementary, where it was revealed that she’d left all her money to the school, with the hope of funding a new music program.

Back in Season 22, Alice seemingly died in the episode “Replaceable You” after an attack by a rogue robot seal. The death didn’t stick, though, as Alice later appeared as both a ghost and as a live woman in future episodes.

So, is Alice truly dead this time? According to The Simpsons executive producer Tim Long, the answer is yes.

New TV shows to watch this week: Tune in to 'DTF St. Louis' on HBO, stream 'Sunny Nights' on Hulu and catch 'Three Women' on Starz

My recommendation: DTF St. Louis

Why you should watch it: DTF St. Louis is HBO’s latest dark comedy miniseries, and I wouldn’t let the somewhat obscene title scare you away. We follow an excellent cast: Jason Bateman plays Clark Forrest, a weatherman who bonds with sign language interpreter Floyd Smernitch (David Harbour) when they meet serendipitously during a stormy weather broadcast.

They’re both navigating middle-aged dissatisfaction. They want more out of their sex lives, and embark on an (ill-advised) journey by joining an Ashley Madison-esque dating app, aptly called DTF St. Louis, to pursue extramarital activities.

The elephant in the room here is that the role has uncanny parallels to Stranger Things star Harbour’s turbulent relationship with Lily Allen, chronicled in detail through her exposing biographical album released last year. In DTF, he plays a restless suburban dad who’s trying to bond with his stepson, while the family’s difficulty making ends meet means his wife, Carol (Linda Cardellini), has to work as an umpire for local baseball games.

There are already some messy interpersonal dynamics happening here, especially when Clark and Carol begin a flirtation — but things really kick off when a dead body at the end of the first episode upends any expectations you might have had about where this was all headed.

Enter Detective Donoghue Homer (Richard Jenkins) and special crimes officer Jodie Plumb (Joy Sunday), who launch an investigation into what happened. They have their own quirky dynamic, with Donoghue trying to bulldoze his way to a closed case while Jodie spots a few nuances that change the trajectory of their investigation. I have to admit, I did not see some of the twists coming. They trace back this odd love triangle and find more than a few skeletons in the closet along the way.

Every episode of DTF is written and directed by Steven Conrad (Patriot), and it’s very well produced. The St. Louis suburbs aren’t the most exciting televisual experience, but Conrad’s directing is dynamic while the show is edited to jump back and forth between timelines. There is also a comedic thread throughout — Floyd has a recurring bit about how Peyronie’s disease has caused his curved penis, and Bateman does what only Bateman can do with his deadpan delivery. It’s easily one of the more engaging shows of late, so I guess I’m DTR (down to recommend).

How to watch: New episodes air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and stream simultaneously on HBO Max.

Just like Ozark, they filmed it in Georgia, because GA gives lots of tax incentives to tv/movie productions.

I hope some bored middle aged Ballwin couples [expletive] over a piping hot large Imo's with pepperoni and italian sausage in this show.

Local comedian Nikki Glaser spoke fondly about St. Louis on TV recently:

There's no place like home for Nikki Glaser.

During her April 22 appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, the comedian, 41, told hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos what it was like to film her new comedy special Good Girl in her hometown of St. Louis after moving back there years ago.

“You literally went home to St. Louis and shot it there. How was that?” Consuelos asks of Glaser's stand-up show, which premieres on Hulu April 24.

“I live in St. Louis. I moved back to St. Louis after Covid and kind of just got away from it all and stayed there,” she explained. “When I'm on both of the coasts, it's like constantly comparing yourself, and everyone's just really chasing that status,” she said at the time. “Here, it just feels a bit more relaxed, and I get back to what's important: having a good time and going out to eat.”

She also said moving back to her hometown has helped her stay connected to her family, which is something that's important to her at this stage in her life.

That’s right, Coach Lasso, the show’s beloved mustachioed and mild-mannered namesake, who helped guide audiences through a global pandemic with optimism and humanity, is back on the football pitch.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, who is stepping down from his role this fall, posted the teaser on social media, writing, "Welcome back coach! Ted Lasso returns August 5 on @AppleTV!"

Murray Head's brother passed away; 2nd notable name to die of pneumonia in the past few weeks:

Anthony Head, 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and 'Ted Lasso' star, dies at 72, family says

Anthony Stewart Head, the English actor who portrayed the Watcher and school librarian Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died, his family said on Friday. He was 72.

Following the end of Buffy in 2003, Head joined the cast of the BBC comedy sketch show Little Britain from 2003 to 2005. He went on to star in four seasons of the BBC drama Merlin as King Uther Pendragon, from 2008 to 2011. On the big screen, he starred in the 2008 horror musical Repo! The Genetic Opera, opposite Alexa Vega and Paris Hilton. The film returned to theaters for a one-day run in May.

In 2020, Head joined the cast of Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso as former football team owner Rupert Mannion. He became a series regular during Season 3.

Head's death follows the recent deaths of two Buffy costars. Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, died in March at age 54. Michelle Trachtenberg, who portrayed Buffy's younger sister, Dawn, died in February 2025 at age 39.
