Gotta hand it to Mozeliak. A .500 team with four catchers, no hitters with an OPS over .800 and no starters with an ERA below 4 is his masterpiece. He’s going out on top.

Well, when you put it like that... Mozeliak as GM: GOAT?

Is sepculation when sepsis sets in? Because I could see that happening with this trade deadline.

Not trading Helsley over the winter was malpractice. The kind of decision that gets made when you’re more interested in easing someone into retirement than building a successful baseball team.
Typically I would agree that the closer market in the offseason (or anytime) is great to exploit. However the Brewers got Caleb Durbin and Nestor Cortes for Devin Williams - that lets you see what the market was. I'd say Williams is/was a little better than Helsley. In essentially a salary wash deal the Brewers got the injury risk and salary dump of Cortes, and what feels like a 25-year old Saggase-clone. I would hope/think that with bullpens across baseball in somewhat of a flux that they may be able to get more than that for Helsley even with his lesser performance.

Mikolas and Gray would both be unwilling to waive their respective no-trade clauses

USA Today's Bob Nightengale recently dropped the bombshell report that indicated Mikolas and Gray would both be unwilling to waive their respective no-trade clauses if the Cardinals tried to deal them away from St. Louis.
"Cardinals starters Sonny Gray and Miles Mikolas still say they have no interest in leaving St. Louis, and would exercise their no-trade clauses to veto any potential deals," Nightengale wrote.

The Cardinals are planning on keeping third baseman Nolan Arenado through the deadline with no teams showing strong interest in him since he rejected potential deals to the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels.
The St. Louis Cardinals remain undecided whether they will trade closer Ryan Helsley at the deadline, but since they don’t plan to tender him a qualifying offer, they realize they may have no choice but to move him with at least five contenders showing interest.
