Re: Music talk Thread
The music industry is so incredibly broken. This album was released on the "Mom + Pop" indie label. How could the gigantic corporations let an album like this get away from them? Some will try to point out we no longer have a "monoculture" and everything is niche and fragmented now due to the internet. But they are saying this in the year of the largest grossing arena tour of all time. The record labels and other machinery that promote music still know how to do it, and can still do it well. They are just extremely risk averse now. I think Magdalena Bay is so good and still young enough that, say, maybe someday you'll see them on The Tonight Show or something. But in the 90s a band with this much talent would have been signed to a major label about 2 albums ago. Major labels just don't do that any more unless they are a super viral sensation or something...but even the Billie Eilish's and Justin Biebers of the world had to be massively successful on YouTube first.
In the 90s when labels found a new niche that was popping up, they would be scared that a competitor would scoop up all the talent in that niche, so they'd sign bands really early in their careers. You might say "Oh well they have no idea how popular that niche band will be, so they can't risk it" but that is what the major labels do - they can make things popular if they want. Like some label would discover grunge or nu metal, and then promote the [expletive] out of it. Then all the other labels would have to scramble and react to keep up with the competition and we'd end up with a grunge or nu metal era for a few years. That just doesn't happen any more.

Oh [expletive]. Soul Coughing is touring with the original lineup. I am 10,000 times more excited about this than Oasis and truly more surprised.
As much as the Gallagher were shoved down my throat that always seemed inevitable to me. If the powers of the industry and music media needed me to care that much, there was always going be to be money in it that would be needed at some point. Frankly, they should be remembered about as much as Soul Coughing. When some doofus starts playing Wonderwall we should be breaking our brains trying to remember ‘who was that band again?’ before asking them to stop. But somehow I know everything about them. someone was engineering an Eagles thing the whole time.
I’ll go next Tuesday. Doughty may not do shrooms with you again though, @heyzeus depending on what kind of sober he is.
In summation; Soul Coughing is probably pretty accurately rated. Oasis is wildly overrated. Weezer is also overrated, but I’m going to go to their Blue album anniversary at the freaking Blazers arena. Is it going to be a bunch of Gen Z at the Soul Coughing show? I’m expecting a bunch of mes. But these kids are weird. They LOVE Ween for some reason.

id pay top dollar just to see a live performance of Janine
re: weezer and their album anniversary concerts...they did a blue album show and a pinkerton show at the Ryman in nashville back in 2014. i tried for the blue album, but naturally all the tickets were snatched up in like 5 minutes. i ended up with the very last ticket in the house for the pinkerton show and it was amazing. i think mainly because it was a more intimate setting--i definitely wouldn't bother with an arena show.
pretty stoked about the upcoming arcade fire funeral 20th anniversary show at red rocks on monday night--i feel so lucky to be holding a ticket for that show (at face value price)

No no no, this is all wrong. We smoked pot with M Doughty in Peoria, not shrooms. Please, respect the game.BottenFieldofDreams wrote: ↑September 10 24, 9:35 pmOh [expletive]. Sadly, there aren't any Soul Coughing shows anywhere near Austin, but I suppose if it goes well and they sell tickets, they may add dates. I will absolutely go.
And like you, a solid Gen X Dad Rock bro, I'm going to the Weezer blue album tour later this month, but I'm most excited about seeing Dinosaur Jr for the first time. The Flaming Lips are fun too, and we all loved the Yoshimi album back in the day.

i agree that oasis and weezer (even though i too can enjoy the blue album) are overrated and soul coughing was/is a fun, interesting band. looks like soul coughing is coming to colorado but of course to denver and boulder and i dont wanna drive over the mountains but they would be a show i would actually consider.
im grateful i got to see ween (for the first time), even if it was limited 'cause it was part of the south park 25th anniversary show.

If Matt Sharp was with Weezer I’d be a little more excited. If The Rentals were opening I’d be much more excited.
Weezer touring on the Blue album release booked before they blew up—so in a small theater—was my first rock and roll show. I was terrified. Mom shouldn’t have let me go. I’m sure I’ve shared that here, and many times. I have to go.
I wish Archers of Loaf and Red House Painters would be there to complete the reunion. I do like the lineup though. I don’t know how weird Flaming Lips can get as an opener in an arena—hopefully weird enough.
Soul Coughing sold out in Portland. I was able to get tickets below face value on the secondary market. Just glad I heard about it.

Re: Music talk Thread
I'm really pushing music on my kid. Or anything that isn't Fortnite. Trying not to be an overbearing sportsdad about it. So we turned Top Summer Hits 2024 on the way to school today--expecting really lame 90 second songs that were barely a kernel of an idea with that mumble half-rapping with a 'yah' at the end of every line.
But this was the first thing I got. Hot damn! That whistle? Horns? Yes. Catchy as hell. I'm going to take a boom box into his homeroom class and embarrass him to oblivion dancing with this. That will surely get him into music.
