Every time they add a reliever through trade and the rule 5 draft (3 of their top 6 projected this way this offseason), I just tell myself that Mo is horrendous at signing FA relievers and it keeps the dream of adding another starter alive.
I am with you here. Every time they waste another 8 or 9 million on a lousy reliever is just more dead weight within DeWitt’s salary cap. There’s also the probability that DeWitt won’t let Mo go over the budget any more to extend for that “one last piece”, since we got burned with Greg Holland.
However I wouldn’t hold out hope that anything significant is still coming. It is becoming apparent to me that the Cardinals are being very conservative with spend and contract lengths until the Bally situation is cleared up. Also not going to rule out that they are tidying up the contracts for a potential sale of the team.
Denton even said on the radio yesterday during the Cease discussion, that Dewitt told him they're tapped out from that Bally situation so they're not committing to any long term deals. They're not opposed to adding players but other money is going to have to come out to balance it. So hypothetically if they did trade for a Cease, who's making about 6 Million, someone making 6 Million gotta be going back or coming off the books one way or another.
If I had more money than God and nothing was going to change that, I would probably use it to improve my team and be revered by the locals for as long as I live because it’s that simple

Are Siedler and Cohen going to be revered for as long as they live? I don't think it's as simple as spending money. I do think Dewitt falls short of what you're saying though.....but not just because of finances.
I'm trying to think of owners who were/are revered. In my case, Pat Bowlen (long-time Broncos owner) comes to mind, for sure. It wasn't because he spent more money than anyone (not an option in the NFL). It's because he always demanded that his organization uphold the fans as much as possible, and expected the people in his organization to behave with class and dignity......and he always behaved that way himself.

thats what annoys me...why can't he take a hit for a couple seasons? i realize the TV rights is a concern and sure thats fair...so...why not move oh, i dont know, 200 million from your bank account that has 4 billion into the bank account that finances the cardinals (i know thats simple). he chose to buy this team (and his ROI has been quite successful), no one forced him...show that you care and are willing to do a little extra and not put the burden solely on the fans to sell out every home game, buy merch, buy products, buy mlb.tv. i mean, im sure the interest he makes on some of his accounts could add 50 million to the budget in an instance. i dont think anyone here truly expects multiple massive FA contracts every year..but...sign scherzer that one year....then a few years later you can sign harper...then a few years later, yada yada...you hire accountants bill, you can figure this [expletive] out. and if your pride in developing players is so high then you can trust your internal pieces to fill out the roster alongside proven talent. /end rant

Dewitt really is none of that.
Mets fans have already turned on Cohen to an extent here in NY.
Right. Owners will never be revered for spending money.
Also, I didn't realize you were in NY.
Agreed. It's really about winning. Spending money gives you a small bit of leniency from the fanbase, but that's it. Only owner getting praised now is the Dodgers collective, and that'll change the moment they lose in 4 games in the NLDS.
And indeed. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. My path to Cardinal fandom was very random, but I'm here lol.
