Let’s talk about crappy cars

I had a Cherokee Sport something or other in the late 90s, I think it was the last year before it went away for awhile, and it was perfect for the three years I drove it. I hated that it went away because I prefer the styling over the Grand but now I'm seeing a couple others from 2000-2010 that have that somewhat boxy shape. Anyone have opinions on the Jeep Commander? Looks like their response to the LR Discovery?

I know that it has a rear window that opens which is not a huge deal but a handy feature that has been lost to time with all the newer egg shaped crossovers.

I have an older body style Armada that I'll sell you for cheap. My wife is a fan of boxy SUVs but I like it less than our 2013 Pilot that preceeded it. Anyway, since she's not pulling a boat with it every day I think we can lose the 5.6L V8.

How's the Nissan been for you? Are they now considered on par with Honda and Toyota?

It's been fine. We've put 100k on it and the only major issue has been an evap code. There's something about the catalytic converters in those cars where it's a pretty expensive fix so instead I dropped these $50 mini cat plugin things in it and cleared the code and it's passed emissions etc. I'm in a position where when I sell it I'll want to disclose that so it'll probably be to someone I know who needs it for pretty cheap. Now it needs struts and it's time to move on.

You can tell by that last paragraph I don't know what I'm talking about with cars but I've had good luck with Nissans. I owned a Titan with that same V8 that never had a single issue, same with a G37X I drove for a few years, Q45 I had in college and Sentra in highschool. The infinitis in my experience are a great way to get some of what you get out of luxury cars without the crazy maintenance costs. I'm tempted to buy a used Mercedes SUV or something for my wife but I know it'll be a money pit. There's a reason why I guess you can buy a used Range Rover or MB for the same price as a Honda.

I like wagons too. I'd like to find an Infiniti EX or an Acura TSX wagon but I don't see a ton of them while I'm constantly looking at used cars. My old Prius was really a great car and the hatchback made it feel a lot like a wagon. There's a shocking amount of room in the back especially if you fold the seat down - I'm scared of the cheap ones though for battery reasons but I'm sure there's a way to test that.

Almost pulled the trigger on a really high mileage 2014 Escape the other day for $3k just to have something else while we sort out our car situation. I have an Isuzu NPR with a 20ft flatbed that I need to sell as well and I'd like my work truck Silverado to become a van. It's a mess.

Finally! Found an ‘01 Dae Woo Nubira in my area. Has there ever been a better car?

Seems like Covid prices have normalized a bit. Where do you suggest looking for listings? I still like craigslist because I can sort by clean title (fwiw, plenty of liars) and other criteria. Deals seem best on Facebook, but people also seem generally clueless there when I ask questions. I also hate installing Messenger just to shop. Don’t use FB at all otherwise. OfferUp seems like the salvaged title yard. It’s probably all three. I’m certainly not going to a dealer in the price range I’m looking at.

We have a 2011 Maxima with 240k in the driveway, CVT just started slipping - didn't do anything special while owning (since new). Outlier, for sure. Speaking of, anyone want to buy it?

Auctions are only good to go to if you don't really need a car but you want to check some out and maybe get lucky on a deal that no one notices. A lot of the cars are not worth it but some are repossessions, etc and perfectly fine vehicles. You have to see what is in your area.
