Have to trade them before they lose their value, I guess. Waiting doesn’t help. They’ve probably screwed themselves on TON and Carlson.

I don’t think they’re capable of doing what’s needed. Selling players with expired contracts is easy. Making a position player for pitcher swap is not. Signing free agents is not. They’re bad at both and afraid to do both.
This is what I come back to. For the players they traded away, in a vacuum, I don't have a problem, but it fixes nothing for 2024. So it's time to nut up or shut up. They either have to trade some young position players and/or actually, meaningfully, increase payroll because they're three starters short.

Can someone please remind me how we acquired Montgomery?

It seems to me they’ve mostly done the right things to put themselves in a better position for the off-season. The trade value for TON, DC, etc was only high yesterday if contending teams needed league average outfielders, which doesn’t appear to have been true. The offseason should be more open than that. Teams will be looking to fill rosters not one or two just holes in the big league team.

They clearly intend to spend for pitching. How well they do that is another question, but I can’t complain about what they did this go-round.

And when they've done that, perhaps they can remind dmarx how they acquired, say, Marcell Ozuna? Or Mike Leake? Greg Holland? Andrew Miller?

How’d those moves work out? That’s why they’re afraid.

If they want to trade for a young, established starting pitcher, they're going to have to trade someone that they know is already good, not someone that might be good later.

Is there a nice summary of scouting for our newest prospects somewhere handy? I know Phins was sprinkling knowledge around.

Montgomery worked out well. So in spite of the Ozuna trade not working out, Mo was not afraid to pull the trigger on Montgomery.

It’s not either/or, they have to do both of those things.
