The Cardinals had no path to building a strong pitching staff in 2024 and beyond without adding significantly from outside the organization. A downturn was coming one way or another.

Those are the guys who can and should be playing outfield when they are on the field. Trading away one of those ensures that you have a bad outfielder on the field at all times.

I anticipate they stand pat.

Where do you put Walker then?

Walker, Gorman, Goldschmidt, Arenado get time at 1B, 3B, DH. Walker can also get spot starts in the corner outfield positions, depending on matchup.

I don't think it's good for young guys like Walker to bounce around position to position, and only starting 4 or 5 games a week. Walker and Gorman especially need a steady position, and to be in the lineup every day (excepting the occasional rest day).

If the club is as committed to Walker as they seem to be (rightfully)... they need to free up that logjam.

I don’t disagree with you at all. The team needs to not screw this up. It’s entirely possible that today could be the last day they get anything of value for Nolan Arenado. Guys can fall apart overnight at his age. Do they hang on and take a chance, or do they move him and create an opening for young player? Glad I’m not the one making that decision.

3 straight 90+ win seasons (covid year excluded) isn't good enough for this fan base.

Some folks here should root for the Yankees or Dodgers instead. You would be much happier.

2021 took an absolute miracle to get into a play-in game due to the Reds and Padres having historic implosions, a 17 game win streak in September, and Happ/Lester eating innings and being close to average after they were acquired. They basically gave up on 2021 and acquired Happ/Lester to just eat innings and not destroy the rotation or bullpen without a sliver of thought for making the POs. If they were aiming to do that, they would’ve done more.

After 2021, FO said they’d invest in pitching. They did the bare minimum in signing Matz, dealt with pitching issues going into the deadline, made 2 good trades in getting Montgomery and Quintana(who they could have signed in the off-season), and lost to the Phillies in the WC series.

They then disingenuously claimed payroll would go up in 2023, which it did via an accounting maneuver, and had the same exact problems with the pitching rotation as they did in 2021 and 2022 that is exacerbated by the defense being bad.

That’s why I’m not giving them a pass. They’ve made the same damn mistake 3 seasons in a row and haven’t done anything to rectify that. The TDL in 2023 is a step in the right direction, but until they back up their talk of wanting to get pitching for 2024 via trade or FA, they don’t deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Man, you really need to stop lecturing people and being condescending. You're beating a dead horse and we all get it by now.

It's well understood that 89 wins and a Wild Card/first round exit checks all the boxes for you, but despite your opinion that the rest of us don't deserve to be Cardinals fans, a lot of people are excited that a gut punch is going to lead to necessary improvements that might actually get us back to the World Series.

What you find to be sufficient has long been stale for a lot of other people.
