I read that Dest hadn’t even been to the US until five years ago. I believe you only need a citizen parent.
You technically don't even need one. Musah is only eligible for the US because his Ghanaian parents took a vacation to NYC and he was born there. You probably know this but Tim Weah's dad is the president of Liberia.

thrill could certainly speak better to this stuff, but there’s (or has been, at least) also a strong overseas military component. Especially in Germany. I was surprised to just Google that we still have 35k troops there.
This is definitely true. Dest, McKennie, and Jermaine Jones are all sons of US servicemen IIRC

Not a country, but a club team in any country. To get to the level of World Cup contender, they have to play against better competition that what you see in today's MLS.
Exactly. Por ejemplo, the January European transfer window hasn't even opened and these are the major pre-agreements already signed of outgoing MLS transfers:
Consider MLS a crucially important player development league as it applies to the national team, and the younger they sell their players to Europe, the better for the player (difficult cultural adjustments not withstanding). This isn't an inherently bad thing. All but essentially four leagues in the world are locked into that mode and it certainly hasn't stopped countries like The Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina, France, Portugal, and Croatia from being regular contenders and even winners.

I wouldn't be shocked if Zimmerman, Acosta, and Ferreira are added to this list in the upcoming weeks. If our best players are playing in MLS when a World Cup comes around, that isn't good. If you have a few, like in this tourney, Zimmerman, Acosta, Ferreira, Johnson, etc, that's not a big deal, but you want your best players competing at the best clubs in the best leagues possible (while also getting regular playing time; you don't want someone stuck on a big clubs bench for too long like Zach Steffen had been, and even Pulisic at this point).

Spain knocked out by a Moroccan panenka. So disrespectful. So sweet. Wild stuff.

But FIFA is like Kroenke meets Donald Sterling and steroid filled concussion coverup all day everyday. It’s a different level. For example, the biggest sporting event in the world is right now being held in slave-built stadiums in a shameful human rights environment.

What a sad story about Wahl. At 48 I feel like his perspective of the growth of US soccer, with his passion, was possibly the most rounded and interesting.

Wrt the tournament, rooting for the favorite is not my style. But that Brazil team was great to watch, and I feel cheated out of a gigantic Argentina/Brazil semifinal.

11 shots on goal to 1. So cruel.
