I wonder if umpires could potentially be looped into the PitchCom system for each team in the future, so that they'd know what pitch was coming ahead of the delivery. Looks like this one crossed up the ump... That's my only explanation for a ball call.

I guess the question is, would knowing what each pitch is as it is called be beneficial for an ump when it comes to balls/strikes? I'd never thought about it before. Although, then you'd have umps tipping pitches with how they set up...

I think almost assuredly the umpire had to have lost sight of the ball. Cease didn't miss his spot, and the catcher wasn't crossed up on the pitch.

The curve ball was so good that it buckled the umpire as well. Obviously a really bad call, but certainly not the worst.

I've never seen a strike zone call that bad.

Talking about horrible umpiring, did Angel Hernandez retire or go on a long vacation? Haven't heard anything about him screwing up calls for a few weeks now.

Oh give me a bleeping break. He can not be serious. If he had 1 more eye he'd be a cyclops.

been there, done that. Y'all ought to get out there and call some baseball games. It's fun and educational. And sometimes humbling and embarrassing.

Check out these horrible umpires getting the rules exactly right while the broadcast crews drone on about how horrible they are:
