Rest in peace to an industry friend

Post by The Third Man »

I went searching on the second or third page for a relevant thread and then figured screw it; who cares?

A coworker of mine (and formerly haltz) has passed. I wrote a brief and spontaneous eulogy for him. I hope you'll read it. Otherwise, it is what it is.
my coworker Bryan, a decades-long staple of the St. Louis fine dining and high dollar service industry, passed the other night at the age of 61. Bryan was...a character, as my dad would say. his sobriety predated, probably, my industry career, but he had the jittery and unpredictable longwindedness of a good-natured addict in recovery, whose own sense of the blessing of their sobriety frankly far outstrips the feeling of anybody painlessly victimized by their rebirth. all that being said, I'll miss the guy, who was one of the few people weathered enough by the storm of our calling to come out the other side laughing at the sheer luck he should find himself here and for that matter well and alive and vertical for quite a bit longer than could have been guessed, go figure. go forth, buddy, into that unimaginable afterlife with the same smile with which you long since resolved to greet each moment of the life you never ever took for granted.

This one hit me pretty hard. I've never met someone less burned out and just happy to be there in an industry full of cranky, exhausted degenerates. The kind of guy who might screw something up, joke about how he's lost a step and thank someone for their criticism. He had the gift of being able to smile and talk to pretty much anyone at any time.

For me personally, he worked at the restaurant I worked at forever for a year or two at the end of its run. When I first met him he kind of felt like that puppy who follows you home, a little annoying and very persistent, but when that place closed three years ago he started calling me once a week or so, just to check in, and never stopped. I'd answer, he'd say "hello, young man," then ask me about work, my relationship, and sobriety. He'd listen to me likely complain about something, tell me he understood, that he just feels grateful and blessed and ask if I wanted to get lunch when I had some free time. I didn't take him up on that as often as I should've. I sort of do my own thing with sobriety and don't go to the secret meetings, and he was an actual sponsor to a lot of people, but if I had someone that resembled one for me it was probably him. Looking back on it, like I'm forced to do now, his friendship was really important to me and I'll miss him.

He only ever wanted to work a few shifts a week, lived modestly and drove a very poor example of a Honda Accord, would wear obnoxiously beat up cut-off sweatpants with paint splotches and an old t-shirt. He had this side hustle of detailing cars for people, and every once in a while you'd be walking to the parking lot and he'd be talking about living frugally and how he didn't need much and what was important to him was having time to help others blah blah blah, and then all the sudden he'd pull a key fob out of his pocket, get into like a [expletive] Lamborghini and squeal the tires a little bit on the way out.

Just seeing this thread now, but I'm really sorry to both of you on the loss of your friend. It's tough times out there.
