In early aughts, there was a lot to push back on with DMB fans, it was really a whole thing that never really resonated with me. I saw them live a couple of times and certain songs I'm a big fan of - Song that Jane Likes, #41 etc. It just never quite clicked for me - same with Radiohead and Phish. There's something that correlates with U2 as well around that time.

i like a lot of DMB songs but i hate/d their fans. for some reason, DMB was big with debate/forensics people at my high school and i remember one time someone said something to the effect of "if you don't like DMB you don't know music"...i'm just like F off with that. granted that's just some teenager back in the day but ugh, i hated that mentality.

i see this list doesn't include primus. TRASH.
Yes, this is what I'm talking about. This is DMB and Radiohead fans at their worst. Only we never grow out of our HS pretensions.

He doesn't veer too far from pop. I doubt Primus gets a shout. That would be fun though. He did do CAKE, obviously, because he knows that if you don't like CAKE you don't understand what it means to be a human.
hah, i think what irritated me was, i was a drummer, the school band and jazz band, was in a few bands with friends, etc...it was an important thing for me for about a decade or so. not that i was some genius or in bands that "changed the world", purely just for fun but the comment was so...ugh...and probably in theory harmed any interest i had for that guys favorite band rather then helped. 1st world problem.

and yeah i wouldn't expect primus, hah, just me "griping". even though i dont need a profile on them, being my favorite band and all.

I saw the tour for Before These Crowded Streets (their best, and in a way, final album) then didn't see them again until a couple years ago. I went off to college and lived overseas for several years and when I cam back DMB was somehow a joke, except that some dbags from high school were now all about driving four hours into the gorge to camp for a weekend and see them play their newer not as good songs. That was very wtf for me.

I still put their youtube concerts on with some regularity. Watching them go at a song you know well, like #41, for 14 minutes with a guest is awesome and comfortable. However, I rather dislike the electric guitar they've added permanently. His soloing doesn't work for me at all--kind of butt rock-y. (Though I love his acoustic work)

For Radiohead, The Bends and OK Computer are personal all-timers. I love In Rainbows. I try and I try and I try with the other stuff, but it won't work for me. On 60 Songs Rob said something like, 'the more they try and alienate us, the more we critics love them'. But the more abstract stuff Kid A and most things forward did alienate me.

Yep, Bends and Ok Computer are pantheon albums. In Rainbows would be most other band's crowning achievement. There's a lot I love from Kid A and Amnesiac, but I never got into the cold, teutonic electro music they were referencing (Can, Autechre) and unsurprisingly, those albums leave me feeling mostly cold as well. Hail to the Thief is good.

But let's talk Pablo Honey. It's not bad, people! Yes, it is very influenced by its moment in the grunge ecosystem, rather than being themselves as they would on every future album (and thus influencing every other band to come after). But even setting aside Creep (which is a perfectly cromulent grunge-era ironic/self pitying single), there are flashes of the greatness to come, for sure. Stop Whispering builds into the anthemic britrock that they'd perfect on The Bends. Thinking About You is a nice little lost-love song about masturbation, and who doesn't love those? Anyone Can Play Guitar is a cheeky fun rock song. They stopped making those after this album, which is a shame (look for the b-side to this album, "Pop Is Dead," for another great example of how good they were at this). Ripcord is a great guitar rock song, likely a spiritual predecessor to My Iron Lung.

So yeah, Pablo Honey is Good, Actually. i will go to bat for it.

really enjoying the Bandsplain podcast.

Rare music discussion podcast that is 0% pretentious. Of course, I've only listened to the DMB and Blink 182 episodes, two of my favorite all time bands so i could be biased. but i feel like i could listen to those episodes all the way thru without rolling my eyes and perhaps gain a greater appreciation for the bands.

I'll test this hypothesis with the Pixies, U2 and radiohead episodes.

This guy's YouTube channel is well worth a follow for anyone who likes, folk, rock, blues, jazz, bluegrass, or country. He does it all, and he does it all well.

Harvilla did Counting Crows. I knew he was a fan based on something I read years ago. One thing that came up a few times (guest Bill Simmons), was their live shows. I've actually never seen one--not for not purchasing tickets, but because they cancelled twice in Portland. But I've watched and listened to some, and I personally generally really like the way Duritz skips beats and changes words and talks out lines in the show--he finds a different connection to the song. But apparently lots of people hate it.

Those first two albums are good--especially the first.

As I get older I've opened up to different music. I think when I was young and played in bands I was a music snob, so I wasted almost two decades being closed minded. Recently I've gone back and listened to a lot of things I missed growing up. The first few Metallica albums, Megadeth, and even some classic country like Waylon Jennings. I also have latched on to Jamie Johnson and Cody Jenks like a decade after everyone else.

Music had kind of gotten stale for me last year and I didn't listen to much of it, but I'm definitely diving back in.
