I love how in Trek there are no human movies or books or music produced after like 1970. It's like the 23rd century onwards and yet every work of art they reference is from 300 - 500 years ago in their time. The writers will invent Klingon composers for Warf to listen to but every human is only listening to Mozart and whatnot and reading Shakespeare and watching old black and white movies from the 1950s.

I kind of feel like all human cultural production right now is just recycling already, so this tracks. Unless china brings some cool new [expletive] to the table (they aren't, they are just going to graft onto our [expletive], i.e. this new marvel movie about a guy with rings), I think we've stopped creating any new, relevant culture. Everything good is too niche to be remembered in hundreds of years. Star Trek social commentary nails it once again.

which is ironic 'cause modern star trek is just going for the big marvel/star wars movie style

There are some annoying things about Discovery - general tendency to tie every storyline to Burnham, characters going on and on about how much they appreciate the person they’re talking to, voiceovers in the intros, some JJ Abrams tics - but on the whole I think it works pretty well and stays true to the old Trek in most important ways. The last episode I watched was about the Trill and it could’ve come out of the old series. Though it also had a decent helping of characters going on about what they mean to each other.

Very glad they’ve moved past the timeline of the previous shows.

I think the newer Trek movies are fine too, though I’d say truer to the original characters than to Trek in general.

if people like modern star trek that's fine and all but these news shows really destroy the history of what star trek was about. it was a show designed for nerds thats now been co-opted by jocks, in the simplest terms. if you want to challenge yourself, i'm telling you, watch the RLM videos on these newer shows. you'll realize why they suck as star trek shows...maybe they're good as new sci fi but they ain't star trek. the name/TM is all they call about.

Not a big RLM fan to be honest, and stuff like that is kind of the reason. Can’t really agree there’s a Trek standard. I think original trek differed from 90s trek in significant ways, and same with newer Trek. Which is fine. It’s not all good and not all bad. For me TOS is my ideal and I find 90s trek a bit dull even though I really like parts of it. I preferred later Voyager to TNG even though it’s got some big flaws and it’s pretty commonly disparaged by Trek fans.

Edit - Another thought. I think the people involved with this show pretty clearly love the material. The characters are almost all thoughtfully written. I think Saru is one of the best characters and species history they’ve ever had. I’ll say again the lighting and photography in Discovery puts most Marvel movies to shame. There’s more than just check cashing going on.

i'll grant you the shows have different feels based on the era/decade they were made but they weren't absurd in their storytelling...in the world that's been established that is. i also realize tv is way different...seasons are not 26+ episodes, they're between 8-15 or whatever. Tv now *does* directly compete with movies and their production values have improved greatly. CGI is more available, etc. it's unfortunately really dumb, bad writing. watch discovery opening credits and there's like 20 producers...whose vision is this? there's way too many cooks and the head chef, kurtzman, is a putz. they just throw [expletive] at the wall and figure out the details later. when i think of TOS and TNG, my main resources for star trek, they're small shows with nuance. they go to a planet and figure out whats going on either diplomatically or sometimes via force, or something on the ship is off and they have to figure out what's going on...not galactic epic wars and stuff that span the whole season. all these companies want their cinematic universes and star trek got caught up in it too.

to each his own of course, i just think if people are going to say all media is being recycled (not your argument) than star trek is no different.
