Are we all on the same page here?

This isn't, imo, a petty/short sighted decision. The guys getting cut will become eligible and receive money from the government.
Why are they paid so little? Minor leaguers aren’t considered employees of their parent clubs, but “seasonal apprentices” under the provisions of the "Save America's Pastime Act," included in the massive 2018 federal tax cut bill.

Under those provisions, they wouldn’t normally be eligible for unemployment benefits. However, former National Labor Relations Board chairman William B. Gould IV says their situation has changed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s clear that independent contractors, as well as so called ‘gig workers,’ are entitled to get the pandemic unemployment compensation,” Gould tells USA TODAY Sports, comparing their situation to that of drivers for ride-sharing services Uber and Lyft.

This would mean that not only would those players be eligible to receive unemployment once their parent club stops paying them, but they would also be entitled to the additional $600 per week Congress has authorized through July 31.

Since minor leaguers are classified as contractors and not employees of the team, as major league players or front-office staffers are, “(MLB) doesn’t have the skin in the game that they normally have because the public is going to be picking up the tab,” says Gould, who’s now a law professor emeritus at Stanford University.

In the case of the A’s players, having those payments from the team cut off sooner rather than later might be to their benefit – since the unemployment payment, plus the extra $600 per week, would be much more their current income.

Couple different alternatives:

1. The releases are all (or mostly all) players that would've been cut at some point throughout the season anyway, they're just happening en masse now (as there have been none so far that I know of) to allow them to benefit financially (lol at that statement but still technically true).
2. There is some sort of agreement b/w teams to let the players go so the players can access the stimulus funds and will be brought back by the original teams when the pandemic is over.

Maybe there's a 3rd option.

AWvsCB - Wouldn't option 2 be considered collusion then?

MLB reporter Francys Romero hears that David Price will give $1,000 in June to every Dodgers minor leaguer.

It's an incredibly nice gesture, especially considering that Price hasn't even officially thrown a pitch for the Dodgers yet. The Dodgers have also committed to continue paying their minor leaguers $400 per week through the end of June.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the Twins have committed to continue paying their minor leaguers $400 per week and their full benefits through August 31.

That's essentially through what would have been the end of the minor league season (which hasn't been canceled yet but is expected to be). The Twins also do not plan to release any of their minor leaguers, per Passan. They join the Padres and Marlins as clubs known to have committed to paying their minor leaguers through at least the end of August.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Royals have committed to paying their minor leaguers for the full season.

They also have no plans to release any of their minor leaguers, joining their AL Central brethren Twins as the only teams doing both. The minor league season hasn't officially been canceled yet, but the assumption is that it will be.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the MLBPA is "weighing the timing and substance of a potential response" to Major League Baseball's financial proposal.

The recent proposal from the league and the league's owners called for significant pay reductions on a sliding scale, with the highest-paid players being asked to take the biggest hit in salary across a possible 82-game schedule. The union feels they've already submitted to sufficient pay reductions via a pro-rated salary plan that was agreed upon back in March. Per the MLBPA memo sent out Friday, via Rosenthal: “Importantly, the union still awaits key documents from MLB that would support the dubious financial distress claims the league has made in its attempt to force the additional givebacks from players.” If there is hope of a season beginning around early July, there probably has to be some progress in these negotiations within the next week.

The MLBPA has submitted their proposal to Major League Baseball.

As expected, the MLBPA does not back down from a refusal to accept a revenue-based system. The proposal calls for a 114-game season; up from the 82-games proposed by MLB in their outline. It also would allow salaries to be deferred for up to two years if there is no postseason due to another shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The plan also would expand the playoffs in both the 2020 and 2021 season; something that has been discussed to increase revenue for the sport to make up for the lost games and lack of fans in stadiums. Perhaps the most significant part of the proposal calls for any player being able to opt-out of playing, but only players that are considered "high-risk" would be paid and the rest would be credited only with service time. Jeff Passan of ESPN also reports that the proposal would call for the season to begin on June 30; earlier than the MLB suggestion of early July. It's a vastly different plan from the one suggested by the owners, but at the very least there is now something from both sides to continue the serious negotiations that will have to take place if there's going to be a season.

This is good news. Both sides should be coming to an agreement shortly.

The chatter I'm reading is that the MLB offer to the players is a nonstarter, and the players' offer to MLB is a nonstarter. Something else has to happen if there's going to be a season.

The players are smart to ask for deferred money in the event a covid-related shutdown. The owners know that's incredibly likely, the players do too.
