Like JC said, the blues certainly got some lucky bounces and still lost. Close game on the scoreboard but it felt like sheer domination after taking a 2 goal lead early in the 2nd. And, that's without the Bruins top line contributing much...

It's just one game, obviously, but if they can't win that game how are they going to win others. They've proven me wrong time and again this postseason by bouncing back, but sheesh, the bruins looked like pretty unstoppable last night.
Maybe you guys checked out for the third, but the play was more even than you're giving credit for. Blues were finally able to make some good zone entries again and apply some pressure. I thought it was a mistake to pull Binnington as early as they did, because they were finally getting in a groove 5-on-5 again.

The large number of penalties called last night take their toll, going both ways. Not only did the Blues have to be on the kill for nearly 10 minutes of the game, that has trickle-down effects based on the PK and PP units. They kept mixing Petro's D partner. Our 4th line guys had nearly as much ice time as Tarasenko. Playing so much time on D wears on you much more than offensive time. Tired skaters make that split second decision to make the long pass attempt to get off the ice, rather than carry the puck until you have a better opening. It's all connected to what looks like being out-classed. I'm not blaming the refs--the Blues need to play more disciplined to stay out of the box, and I think we'll see a better performance all-around. I'm not sure what the winning percentage is for teams who kill nearly 10 minutes of penalties in games, but I can't imagine it is very high. Especially against a team with the top-line skill that Boston has.

Die hard Blues fan stepson, sufferer of much postseason heartbreak, hockey player, former Jr Blue, played against future NHLers back in the day, in exile but lover of all things St Louis BET A BUNDLE ON THE [expletive] BRUINS so he could win either way.

Yeah, the lingering affect of the bruins power play was noticeable. The early ones the Blues killed off but seemed like it took a few more dicey minutes after the PP to get any flow back.

bolded part is me, though I doubt we're related and I'd never bet against the Blues.

I admit the Blues did look a little better for parts of the 3rd, but that's not really saying much. I didn't see any real offensive pressure except for a couple of chances at the end when Boston finally started turtling, (Tank's nifty backhand, a couple scrums after the ENG) and even those I'd label medium danger more than high danger. Looking "a little better" seemed like not constantly in desperation mode, but I thought Boston clearly controlled the 3rd, and it just felt like a matter of time for them.

I really, really hope you're right about the pk and the trickle-down effect. I readily admit that my focus is goaltending, so offensive tactics and all that isn't my forte, but it seemed like Boston constantly swarmed us and we stood still a lot. I think part of why we were taking penalties was because Boston was wearing us down. Chicken or the egg perhaps?

There is a good chance I'm overreacting. It happens. Its a game, its entertainment and its fun.

One thing to note, the power play, though not great, didn't look terrible. I never really felt like we were in danger of giving up a shorthanded rush, and at least we were able to somewhat keep the puck in Boston's zone. After half of last round, that's not nothing. I could see that getting better with a tweak or two.

The power play did look better, and it looks like Boston thus far has gone with keeping their defenders in a tighter formation than what SJ and DAL were going with. That helps with cycling the puck around the perimeter and keeping possession, but we had difficulty getting the puck to Tank for a good shot that was so effective late vs. SJ.

True, but having possession is step one and gives you options. At the least, we could try to clog the middle, throw it on net and hope for screens/deflections and/or rebounds.

I'm 36, so maybe. When I was on the Jr. Blues, it was for 1/2 a season, and we combined the 15-18 year olds (when I was 15) to make one team (competing against other 18 year olds), so I'm guessing I didn't play with or against him since he would have been 13 then(?). Despite the additional players to choose from, we went something like 2-37-1. This was before St. Louis teams started to get really good. We were not good. At all.

The only NHLers I played with/against that I know of were Mike McKenna (against in high school), Cam Jansen (with in a roller hockey league when I was first starting), and Yan Stastny (he was on my high school team for maybe 3-4 weeks before transferring to another school), and I thought one more guy got a cup of coffee in the NHL but I can't remember. So I played with/against backups and journeymen, but hey, they made the show so good for them! More than I ever did.
