Re: Stanley Cup Finals 2019: Blues v. Bruins
I feel a bit better today than I did last night. Really there were only ~30 minutes in the middle of the game where the ice was tilted to the Bruins. The goals they scored weren't fantastic--a bad bounce of a skate, a long shot late in a power play, etc.--but I also realize they had fantastic scoring chances that Binnington was able to save or rang off a post. Overall though, the Blues played fairly good defense against a really skilled offensive team with momentum.
I'm a bit more concerned that the Blues had trouble building momentum themselves. Outside of the goals, the Blues didn't have many good scoring chances. However they had stretches like this against the Jets, Stars, and Sharks too where they ultimately figured things out. I have confidence they will against the Bruins too. I just hope it isn't after they are in a 0-2 or 0-3 hole. They need to stop taking so many penalties--hard to build any offensive momentum when you are killing a penalty every couple minutes.
Rask looked mortal last night. That's good news at least.

I also think the Blues have no (well, little) chance, and am getting some scrap at work for it. Hey, you can't have been a diehard for 3 decades and not be conditioned for heartbreak. (I mean, sure you can, but just let me have this one)
Iirc, I thought the sharks outplayed the Blues in game 1, but at least there were times when the Blues showed that they could maintain offensive pressure, and I think my response was the equivalent to, "The Blues need to clean things up and look less talented, but its only one game). I think I was even fairly optimistic after losing 2 at home vs. the Jets. There were literally zero minutes last night after we went up 2-0 that I thought we showed the ability to control the game, or even just not be dominatetd. That's what worries me and makes me think its "over". (though not necessarily a sweep, just in terms of winning 4 out of 6.) It looked like the Bruins vs the Parkway North Purple Vikings in the last 38 minutes.
That said, I'm going to the watch party on Wednesday and Dad and I splurged for game 4 tickets so I can't buy groceries until at least July. And as I said after the hand pass game, the Blues don't need to win "4 of 6", they just need to win a game tomorrow. Find a way to win 2 of the first 4. That's all you need to do. Maybe they can clean up and tweak a few things and steal one tomorrow. I hope so.
So am I confident? No. Do I think they have a chance? Sure. A realistic chance? Probably not. Am I rooting hard anyways? You bet your ass.

The Bruins lost 33 games this season, plus 5 more in the playoffs. They are not some unstoppable force.

Untrained observation- Boston looked effective at cutting Blues passes off mid-ice. There was nothing there. Seemed like the Blues had to drop the puck back all the time before pushing it forward.
Saw way too much Bouwmeester And Gunnarson with the puck in that game.

Boston isn't unstoppable, but their style gave the Blues fits.
I mean, its not over until someone wins 4, but I think its fair to say that the Blues were effectively dominated. Its not like Boston got a lot of lucky bounces. In fact, I think the Blues got a lot of lucky bounces, and still lost.
Who knows, maybe the Blues can adjust. I damn well hope so. We'll see Wednesday.

Boston looked unstoppable for about 39 minutes last night, outshooting the Blues, what, 30-10 over those 39 minutes which doesn't include a couple shots off the crossbar.
Like JC said, the blues certainly got some lucky bounces and still lost. Close game on the scoreboard but it felt like sheer domination after taking a 2 goal lead early in the 2nd. And, that's without the Bruins top line contributing much...
It's just one game, obviously, but if they can't win that game how are they going to win others. They've proven me wrong time and again this postseason by bouncing back, but sheesh, the bruins looked like pretty unstoppable last night.

When they interviewed Berube briefly there at the first intermission (I think) he even said this, but it only got worse after that. There is some adjustment they need to make there. The Bruins intercepted so many passes at center ice or just inside the blue line. The Bruins always seemed to be in the exact right place pretty much all of the last 2 periods except for the one power play and maybe a couple other times.Freed Roger wrote:Untrained observation- Boston looked effective at cutting Blues passes off mid-ice.
