Would you guys have been ok with that type of deal if it was with our Cardinals?

Maybe. I would have been cautiously optimistic while thinking 7 mil seems a little high for a guy who hasn't pitched in a year and a half. I was expecting a base of maybe half that, letting us rage about why we didn't take a flyer at such a low cost.st.lewis11 wrote:Would you guys have been ok with that type of deal if it was with our Cardinals?

Ok? I'd have been [expletive] ecstatic. He was my #1 bullpen target.st.lewis11 wrote:Would you guys have been ok with that type of deal if it was with our Cardinals?
It's really easy for fans to hate their own relievers and covet other teams relievers. It's also really easy to forget how damn good Rosenthal is.

Mo is your answer, he SUCKS badly!Big Amoco Sign wrote:Cardinals have a serious problem with forecasting analytics and assembling their roster.
Voit should have been a Cardinal over Adams
Pham should have been a Cardinal over... any of our current OF.
10.1 fWAR in two years. Yep move him for uh, more time for Dexter Fowler and two guys who struggle with plate discipline.
Someone should be held accountable for these objectively awful moves.

Yeah, $7MM seems like a pretty high base for a guy coming off Tommy John. Especially a guy who can struggle with control.obucard wrote:Maybe. I think I would have been happy with a $5MM base, going up to $12MM with incentives. Not that a couple million really matters much.

we gave a much older guy, who clearly broke down the stretch in 2017, 14 mil last offseason. half of that seems pretty good to me for Rosie.Popeye_Card wrote:Yeah, $7MM seems like a pretty high base for a guy coming off Tommy John. The Nationals Signed One of 2017’s Best Relievers
by Jeff Sullivan
October 31, 2018
With or without Harper, the Nationals can contend. The idea of them blowing it up was always silly. Far too much talent remains, and on Wednesday, the club has made a notable addition. The Nationals signed a free agent. Not a new free agent, but rather, a preexisting free agent. Trevor Rosenthal spent the 2018 season rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Now he’s the newest member of the Nationals’ bullpen. A bullpen they hope can lead them back to October.
If this feels a little like when Greg Holland signed with the Rockies, that’s not a coincidence. Holland was coming off Tommy John, and he was represented by Scott Boras. Rosenthal is coming off Tommy John, and he’s represented by Scott Boras. Rosenthal is already 14 months out from his surgery, and he’s currently throwing without restrictions. He’s younger than Holland was as a free agent, but the contracts are very similar.
https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-nat ... relievers/Given that, then, Rosenthal’s 2017 was fairly similar to, say, Corey Knebel’s 2018. It was fairly similar to, say, Craig Kimbrel’s 2018. That’s what the Nationals hope they’re signing. That’s what the Nationals hope they’re putting in front of Sean Doolittle. This was a thin bullpen. This still is arguably a thin bullpen, depending on how much you like Barraclough. How much you like Justin Miller. How much you like Matt Grace and Koda Glover. Rosenthal’s got his injury concerns, and so does Doolittle, too. But when they’re right — if they’re right — those are two of the game’s more unhittable relievers. You can imagine October baseball and dream, to whatever extent Nationals fans still have hope in their hearts.

Re: Former Cardinals Watch
Well it is pretty much identical to what the Rockies gave Holland. $6MM base with up to $8MM in additional incentives, plus a 2018 vesting option with a $1MM buyout. And as you stated, he fell apart in the second half of that season.cardsfantx wrote:we gave a much older guy, who clearly broke down the stretch in 2017, 14 mil last offseason. half of that seems pretty good to me for Rosie.Popeye_Card wrote:Yeah, $7MM seems like a pretty high base for a guy coming off Tommy John. It's not a bad contract for Rosie at all. I'm just not upset at all that the Cardinals didn't match or beat it. (Also considering there might be some bad blood with Rosie and the organization since they non-tendered him and didn't do a bridge contract last year while he rehabbed--he may not have wanted to sign back here.)
