Schmid features a sinking fastball that runs from 86-90 mph, as well as a good curveball and a very good changeup. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound left-hander is a strike-thrower and has shown to be a competitor when faced with adversity.

Round 14: Brandon Riley, a 2B from North Carolina.

Round 15: Mike Brettell, a RHP from Central Michigan.

The 6-foot-3 righty was a workhorse for Central Michigan, leading the team with 15 starts and 93 innings pitched this season, including two complete games. He's flashed very good stuff at times. Brettell has a 90-to-94 mph fastball with darting sink and maintains his velocity, but he gets hit if he leaves the ball up. Brettell also has a slider to work with his fastball, although his changeup floats a little too much.

Round 16: Evan Sisk, a LHP from College of Charleston.

Round 17: Kyle Leahy, a RHP from Colorado Mesa University.

Round 18: Cole Aker, a RHP from University of Tampa.

Round 19: Josh Shaw, a 2B from St. John's.

Round 20: Parker Kelly, a RHP from Oregon.
Very organizational depth draft today. I like the Central Michigan kid, I've seen him live. He was really good against Missouri State for three innings as a reliever, then in the fourth inning of work they got to him a little bit, but mostly singles on balls that probably aren't hits with wood bats. Struck out Eierman pretty overpoweringly.

I honestly wonder if they've just spent all their money on the top-10 rounds. I think we are going over slot on a bunch of those players.

I'm not expecting anything. I'm giving my opinion. Which is worth exactly what you think it is, most likely.

Last year, in the 11th round I loved our pick of Evan Mendoza and I said as much. This year I think we took just a guy and I said as much.

Not much more to it than that.

I was replying to mikechamp and forgot to quote it. But we can be curt.
Because of the money allocation described above by phins, the 11th round usually starts a different strategic selection process. Some teams will take guys they think will sign easily, while others will take a chance on someone who fell out of the 1st 10 rounds because they have a good feel for how much cash they might be able to go above $125k.

Taking "kind of just a guy" tells me something about the draft class, and also says a little about the Cards' draft strategy.

I would say you're making conclusions that aren't there.

Hey, speaking of "kind of just a guy", they drafted Justa. He's a guy.

This is how I read it, too.

Eh. I wasn't being curt, I was simply explaining myself. It's my opinion, but truly nothing more than that. I've gotten back into this year because I'm staying home and have a little more time again, but I'm not some end-all expert.

I distinctly remember liking Carp's approach, but thinking he was org. depth as a senior sign so what do I know.

The only players with any video of them from the Cardinals Day 3 Draft is Kevin Vargas, a shortstop from the International Baseball Academy picked in the 22nd round and Kendrick Calilao, an OF from the First Academy picked in the 30th. I would assume these are the wishful thinking pieces.

Looks like teams are staying away from Luke Heimlich.

Also Parker Kelly, the 20th round pick of the Cardinals, is Carson Kelly's brother.

I am vehemently opposed to Heimlich getting a chance at pro ball. He couldn't work at my company, this isn't a situation where he never gets a second chance at life. He just doesn't get the privilege of other non-felons.

Yeah, the HS kids most likely aren't signing. It's been a very weird third day. I believe the Cardinals have taken the fewest non-four year players of any team.
