MAGA wrote:I’m watching Mad Men again. I question how good this actually was. There’s some good performances and the 60s aesthetic is really cool I guess. Don Draper is a bit cringey upon second viewing. The show takes a dump and doesn’t know where to go about halfway through the series.
In retrospect, maybe it was more style than substance. An aesthetic. A tableau of men behaving badly because they could, and they were entitled to do so, without much heavier commentary than "capitalism is kind of insane and manipulative," which is not a particularly trenchant observation.

It had some all time great performances though, particularly Peggy, Roger, and Don.

No, you guys are wrong. Mad Men is great. How much of the self is a choice? How much is ingrained no matter how hard you try to change it? What is consciousness? What is love? Why do we choose anything other than happiness? Is happiness real or an idea we chase? If we chose happiness could we stay happy or are we incapable of holding onto it? Don't get much more substantial than that.

I've never seen Mad Men but I have been told by others that I would like it. Maybe one day I will get into it but it always seems like there is a lot of other things to watch.

On a semi related note, I'm currently re-watching The Sopranos. Before I started I considered The Sopranos my all-time favorite TV show and now that I'm re-watching it somehow my esteem has actually grown. For example, now that I'm older I find the show's ability to explore specific challenges for different age groups to be fantastic and not something I picked up as much in my younger years. Tony's middle age struggles with family, aging parents, growing responsibilities, etc are deftly handled and way more relatable than I expected.

I also have to give props to how The Sopranos handles their main female characters. Edie Falco is particularly amazing and even better than I had remembered. Carmela is a much stronger villain wife than Breaking Bad's Skyler. In fact, I used to think the The Sopranos and Breaking bad were of similar quality, but I don't anymore. Breaking Bad is a lot of fun, but The Sopranos is something deeper.

Finally, I had forgotten how consistently funny the show is. Tony's quips are amazing (NSFW language):

Great show and great finale.

As long as you don't let David Chase ruin it.

Agreed!

It's crazy how quickly it all wrapped up. I kind of binge watched season 6 this past week without knowing it was the last season. It got to episode 7 and I was like...huh, they're tapping into the Stan/Jennings drama, finally. Then, it got intense. Then, it was insanely awesome for like 15 minutes. Then, it was over.

In the last scene, I was like...wait, no way this show can continue. And, that's incredibly sad on multiple fronts. Googled 'The Americans' and it autofilled to 'The Americans Series Finale' which was disappointing.

I guess you can make inferences, but I'd love to know
[SHOW]
1. What the hell was Paige doing and what was her future? Jail? She has very much not enough skills to live on the lamb. WTF. By far the plot point that made the least sense even though for emotional value, the train scene was beautiful.
2. What fate awaited Phillip and Elizabeth? I mean, the Jennings are persona non grata for sure with the inner circle of the KGB that wanted to over throw Gorbechov, right? I mean Phillip quit and Elizabeth thwarted their plan, going as far as to kill a KGB agent. Sure Arkady, probably one of the most pure characters in the show, picked them up in Russia and we're led to believe that I guess they warned Gorbachev about the plot to overthrow him. But, the KGB, a team full of Jenningsesque spies and masterful manipulators, surely won't go down without a fight. I kept expecting someone to kill them in the final scenes. And, if the KGB was that united in an attempt to overthrow Gorbachev, did he even have enough support/strength to withstand a more forceful coup? Seems unlikely. Also, wasn't Gorbachev in America at this point? So, them getting to Russia...serves what purpose other than getting away from the FBI? Did they get to Canada and call Arkady who then called Gorbachev and Gorbachev just takes him at his word and quashes this rebellion from a hotel room in the USA? Again, seems unlikely even with the weakened state of the KGB with the Jennings departure and that other spies death.
3. If the Jennings were successful in warning Gorbachev and spoiling the KGB's plans, what then happens to Oleg? Sure, the FBI won't release him easily. But, it seems odd that Gorbachev/Arkady would let one of the most ardent supporters of Team Gorbachev rot in an American jail. Further, it seems doubly odd that Stan - who had to at least somewhat buy into the theory that Gorbachev was better than the KGB - would allow him to rot away. It's the same guy for whom he risked his job to protect earlier. And, that's when they were on opposite sides. If he buys Phillip's explanation about saving Gorbachev in order to maintain peace, and it's more than obvious Oleg was there at great peril to himself for some greater good, how does he reconcile letting the Jennings go while holding Oleg?
4. Was Phillip right about Renee? Although, I'm fine with this one going unanswered.
What a great show.

Didn't watch the Americans but from your spoilers I gotta ask - did they have a young Putin in the show? That would have been cool.

Agree with everything Thrill said re Mad Men. It asks a lot of big questions. It's probably more interesting now that we're a half year into the #metoo movement.

Also agree with Micheal re The Sopranos. I love to just pick a random episode on HBOGO and watch for an hour. It's held up really well and I'd take it over Breaking Bad 11 times out of 10. Breaking Bad was probably a better drill-down to one thing (hubris) but The Sopranos casts such a wide net that it can keep surprising you and giving you new stuff to think about.

I'm no expert on the show, so I hesitate to answer.
[SHOW]
The quick answer is no. There was no Putin. Though, there was the 'Center' from where all the orders came and by and large they were very putinesque. For everyone, there was this underlying theme of what is important. For many of the Russians, it was a very putinesque sense of take no prisoners, do whatever is necessary for the Motherland. Claudia was perhaps the most putinesque character on the show who would do whatever she could for the hard lined wing of the KGB. For others, like Phillip, he put his family above almost everything and in the end put his own seemingly minor relationships above 'Country'.

Watched the last two episodes of the Americans this morning. Got a lot of the same questions that you have AW. Still, incredible series.
