difference with silicon valley as i don't think the plot matters as much....i forget the plot/what they're trying to do half the time
but it's so damn funny, i don't care

I agree Barry settled in to being good instead of great, but the episode last Sunday was incredible. I hope the show can keep it up. That was great TVBottenFieldofDreams wrote:I still like it quite a bit, but IMO Barry hasn't really lived up to the promise of the pilot. There was a subtlety that hasn't remained. And as Barry is fleshed out he's less intriguing than when he was a mystery. I guess I thought it was going to be dryer and colder and was excited for that.

It TOTALLY doesn't matter, you're right. The plotlines of "Gang has to figure out a way to get out of this jam" is just a framework from which to hang the real stuff--the characters, their little quirks, their side stories, how we see them develop. Heightening Dinesh's insecurity by having him buy a Tesla then go through the whole Tesla Guy thing then lose the Tesla is fun stuff.cardsfantx wrote:lol trueghostrunner wrote:See also - The Shield, Sons of Anarchy33anda3rd wrote:The structure of Silicon Valley is on repeat.

Put this way, the similarities between Silicon Valley and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia re interesting.33anda3rd wrote:It TOTALLY doesn't matter, you're right. Re: TV Thread - beware, [expletive] can get spoilery
Absolutely. There are some shows that get by on situation alone, many of them great. Curb, Seinfeld, Veep, Cheers. The characters stay the same, they never really develop into anything larger than what they start out as. The writing on those shows is so strong that they're hilarious on situation alone. But there's something pretty special about the Sunny guys planting the seed of Mac being a closeted Catholic gay man posing as a macho let's-bang-chicks dude very early in the series, dropping those little nuggets along the way, then getting to the almost anti-climax of Mac coming out. It becomes a thing you know about the character that informs them. Not "Kramer tried to sneak a latte into the movie" but rather "there's a thing this character is hiding, and he knows it, and his friends know it, and we as the audience know it, now let's see how it will inform the scenes."heyzeus wrote:Put this way, the similarities between Silicon Valley and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia re interesting.33anda3rd wrote:It TOTALLY doesn't matter, you're right. This is something that was hammered into us when I was first studying improv at iO and Annoyance and Second City years ago. The who/where/when are just the framework in the scene from which the character is hung. The what of the scene, the character's wants and secrets and needs, are the real meat. Jared talking to Richard in Silicon Valley about whether or not Richard is happy with the assistant Jared hired for him isn't funny. But Jared needing that assistant to suck so that he can fire him so that Richard will need Jared more is the good stuff, and that show nails that stuff in every scene. Or, to go back to Mac in Sunny, think about all the stuff we know about Mac. There are very few characters in movies or TV who are as fully drawn and complex as that character. All the stuff we know about him, his needs and his ego and stuff, makes him so funny.

Atlanta is so good. It's just not fair how good this show is. It's both the best comedy and the best drama on TV right now.

And The Expanse today, though it sounds like the production company intends to shop it around.MrCrowesGarden wrote:Brooklyn Nine-Nine got canceled and that is a bummer.
I could actually see Netflix picking up B99.
Not sure if they'd pick up the Expanse - it's expensive given the ratings - though they've supposedly planned to focus on sci-fi. Amazon carries the previous seasons, but I've read that they don't like to do pre-existing shows.
