No one was warming. Now he looks like an idiot.
Just gotta give the brewers credit. They earned this win.

Do the cardinals lead the league in 5 out save attempts?

I know I'm late to this, but man, oh man, what a brutal loss. I do believe things get better when Holland has the 9th, Gregerson has the 8th, Leone has the 7th, Lyons/Norris have middle relief, Bowman never pitches, and Cecil is a matchup guy, but who knows at this point.
Realistically, there are multiple MLB teams who will not lose a game like this the entire season. There is truly nothing worse than losing a late lead.
PS- Can we please stop trying to throw whatever the 86 mph pus is that our pitchers are trying to throw? The Brewers bullpen is probably the best in the NL and they have dudes throwing 96+. We should do that more.

In his career which includes seasons in Seattle and Arizona, Leone is 1 for 10 in save attempts.InvincibleCakeEater wrote:Roberto Osuna is that reason.pioneer98 wrote:There is a reason Leone wasn't closing in Toronto.

Lost 1 they shouldn’t now need to find a way to win 1 they shouldn’t. Just hope that 1 game doesn’t come back to bite them in September.

That's kind of what I thought. Wasn't paying close enough attention, but surely someone had to have been available and a better option than Leone at the end.jagtrader wrote:Getting a 5-out save with Leone is not a winning plan. Almost pulled it off.
And what made Matheny decide that Leone was THE guy to run out there for that kind of outing? Spring training performance?

Add that to the fact that Braun absolutely OWNS Leone(4hr, 7rbi) in limited appearances. I never want to see Dom pitch to Braun in a meaningful situation again. Who do we bring out? IDGAF but you can't have a guy with that much success against you beat when it counts..

That said, Leone's performance over the years in save situations is pretty poor. He has almost as many BS's as SV+Hold.

Are you just going by BS count? Because that wouldn't be an accurate reflection of how he has done in "save attempts". You get tagged with a BS any time you give up a lead as a reliever while technically in a save situation, no matter which inning it comes in.pioneer98 wrote:In his career which includes seasons in Seattle and Arizona, Leone is 1 for 10 in save attempts.InvincibleCakeEater wrote:Roberto Osuna is that reason.pioneer98 wrote:There is a reason Leone wasn't closing in Toronto.

Leone was one pitch away from making Matheny look like a genius. In the 5 batters he faced prior to Yelich, Leone struck out 2, gave up 2 lazy fly balls, and a seeing eye single.Fat Strat wrote:That's kind of what I thought. Leone left a couple pitches up and 2 outstanding players made him pay.
Sometimes you just get beat.
But pinning anything on Matheny for the Leone 5 out decision is ridiculous.
