Wild Wild County is a well put together doc on a fascinating Oregon story. Maybe goes easy on the guru himself, but I think that was a deliberate choice in using him only as a frame. If that lawyer/mayor was at Jonestown, he would have drunk up all the Kool Aid before anyone else had a chance at the punch bowl.

Atlanta is back and it's great. It has some of that same weird surrealism of Louie that I miss.

History channel has America Frontiersman. The one on Daniel Boone was informative/entertaining-though i sense a bit light on the history. Native Americans? Show does include their struggle. Token treatment though in a series called American Frontiersman.
The reenactments are lazy at times -when discussing settlers moving over the Appalachians they show wagon trains moving in the plains /far West. I will keep watching though. But f no on the Andrew Jackson one.

I'm watching this right now and it's pretty amazing. I think you can argue the tone of the doc is too sympathetic to the cult, but I think that's mostly a byproduct of them using more interview footage from the members. That's an understandable choice given the cult members are way more interesting than the small town folks and law enforcement.BottenFieldofDreams wrote:Wild Wild County is a well put together doc on a fascinating Oregon story. I thought so too. Overly sympathetic to the cult and even moreso to Baghwan. But I had some pre-developed opinions of the cult, so I wasn't sure how objective I was being. The Oregonian writer interviewed-- his pieces are really good and far more damning. I really wanted to see the lawyer/mayor get roasted or at least a little itchy.Michael wrote:I'm watching this right now and it's pretty amazing. It was interesting to talk to my parents about it.
It's also wild that our one successful, king-making company here in Oregon was organically a significant player.
I don't know how hard they tried but another interview with a disaffected jilted cult member would have been really valuable and balancing, IMO.

I finished the doc last night. I really enjoyed it, but I think the series being overly sympathetic to the cult is a legit criticism. They had some sympathetic music cues for the cult that I thought were inappropriate.BottenFieldofDreams wrote:

Regardless, the doc is a lot of fun. What an amazing story.
