We have a Grand Cherokee, which isn't quite in the luxury class but you get a lot of bang for the buck with the Overland and Summit trims.Radbird wrote:Luxury SUVs - Audi at the top?

I don't have a clue what loaded Grand Cherokee's run, but I'm guessing loaded you can get close to 50k so you could definitely look at luxury models in that range (of course they go MUCH higher).Popeye_Card wrote:We have a Grand Cherokee, which isn't quite in the luxury class but you get a lot of bang for the buck with the Overland and Summit trims.Radbird wrote:Luxury SUVs - Audi at the top?
My sister has one w/ the Overland trim pkg I believe, and it's a really nice SUV w/ pretty much any option you would want/need, I just always worry about the reliability of Jeeps.

Doesn't the SRT jump up into the mid-60s?cardinalkarp wrote:I don't have a clue what loaded Grand Cherokee's run, but I'm guessing loaded you can get close to 50k so you could definitely look at luxury models in that range (of course they go MUCH higher).Popeye_Card wrote:We have a Grand Cherokee, which isn't quite in the luxury class but you get a lot of bang for the buck with the Overland and Summit trims.Radbird wrote:Luxury SUVs - Audi at the top?

EDIT: Just checked. Yeah, the SRT 4x4 starts at $67k. That's the highest end one they make - the next most-expensive one is the Summit, which starts at 53k for the 4x4 version.

I was gonna say. Lots of luxury import talk going on without anyone mentioning the best looking (interior and exterior) options out there.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:I really like them. I've driven the XC 90 and the S90 within the last 4 months (1,200 miles in snow, rain, sleet, through mountains and deserts - Seattle to Portland to Coeur d'Alene, to Missoula, to Seattle) and both are absolutely flawless cars.

Yeah, they are by no means cheap. People normally just don't associate Jeep with being a "luxury" brand.Swirls wrote:Doesn't the SRT jump up into the mid-60s?cardinalkarp wrote:I don't have a clue what loaded Grand Cherokee's run, but I'm guessing loaded you can get close to 50k so you could definitely look at luxury models in that range (of course they go MUCH higher).Popeye_Card wrote:We have a Grand Cherokee, which isn't quite in the luxury class but you get a lot of bang for the buck with the Overland and Summit trims.Radbird wrote:Luxury SUVs - Audi at the top?

When we went car shopping a few years ago, we checked out the Jeep, the Caddy SRX (at that time), Acura MDX, Audi Q5, and the Lexus RXwhatever. The MDX gets great reviews, but we found it to be pretty meh. The Q5 drove the best, but had the most spartan finishes (plus the smallest cargo space). The Lexus had the most comfortable ride. The Caddy had the nicest bells and whistles. But overall the Jeep had the best combination of everything, and the Overland trim level comes in around the base price of the others. Ended up being a pretty easy decision.
Reliability so far has been pretty good. On a practical level, you are probably going to upgrade or refresh a luxury type vehicle like that before things start breaking down mechanically anyway. Unless it is a Land/Range Rover of course.

I think Volvo gets overlooked way too often. They generally make some pretty good cars with some character.

Re: The Car Discussion Thread
I'm somewhat embarrassed because I started this thread, specifically, to talk about what a good idea it is to not spend money on cars. My toyota camry that I got for free basically finally hit a snafu that I couldn't fix. The alarm system went bonkers and I couldn't get it to stop without unhooking the battery, nor could I get it to start at all, so something was wrong with the damn computer.thrill wrote:I was gonna say. Hauled it to the toyota dealer and they wanted $300 or something ridiculous to run the diagnostic test or whatever with no guarantee what was to come of it. Then, if the computer needed replacement, that was going to be another grand or whatever. F that. So, I ended up selling it to a guy in the dealership maintenance dept that needed a car for his daughter. Feel like I got jobbed because he could do that damn test for free and probably replace the computer for a couple hundred bucks which was not an option I could find without towing it from place to place to have mechanics look at it. Oh well.
So, I needed a car. My wife wanted to give me her 07 accord and get a new one. I wanted to get a used truck and just pay cash for it. Turns out that's easier said than done.
We got into probably the biggest argument we've ever gotten into about money and buying useless [expletive] and, well, we bought an xc90 so that says all there is to say about who won the argument.
That said, I do find myself loving the car. It's worthless for anything other than transporting people from A to B, but by goodness I do love driving it/riding in it and feel so much more comfortable both from a physical perspective and mental one when taking it on long road trips compared to the honda. I actually look forward to driving it...which can't be said for any car I've ever owned before.
In the end, she takes really good care of her stuff (unlike me) and we'll probably drive it until little AW is ready for a car and pass it on to him, and then little little AW after that. It's still not a good financial decision, but I can rationalize it away by saying we'll have it for 17+ years.

I think that might be because they didn't modify their body style for a long time with the old xc series or s series and were surpassed in the appearance aspect. They still were reliable, but people wanted the more up to date looks/lights/packages, I'd imagine.IMADreamer wrote:thrill wrote:I was gonna say.
