I guess it's not awful, but the Wild got more for Hanzal than we got for the best d-man on the market.
So, a tall prospect who is probably a 2nd/3rd line potential forward, (so, Berglund?) and a 1st and a 2nd. I was expecting a 1st, a better prospect, and maybe a roster depth player/mid round pick.
All things considered, barring a GM getting desperate, that's probably as good a return as expected for a rental.

I'm glad this saga is over with, but I hope this ends Armstrong's tenure. He bungled this Shatty situation about as badly as possible.
If the 2nd is conditional/lost, then we didn't get enough. If we get it (or a 2nd in 19 or whenever) then its probably about as good as you would expect.
If the tables were turned, and the Blues were renting a player they would not resign, a longshot prospect, a 1st and 2nd would be tough to pay.

this.
everyone in the WORLD, knew the time to trade shatty was before the draft...everyone but DA

Sanford does play center, so that's a plus. I agree with you on what I was expecting too. From possibilities of Taylor Hall or Drouin to Zach Sanford.

This is a late 1st rounder (pretty decent likelihood of it being the 31st overall) in what is considered a weak draft class, a future 2nd rounder that is conditional (hopefully it becomes a first in some situation), and a lackluster forward prospect the Blues have in spades AND we retained salary to make it work.
This is by no means a good deal and I would hesitate to call it anything but a bad deal. The Blues gave up more for a rental goaltender in Ryan Miller and goaltenders have the least trade value typically of any position in hockey. They gave up just as much for JayBo who nobody really wanted because of his salary. Nearly every year rentals go for more than this.

I do wonder about the condition since WSH doesn't have a 2018 2nd. Maybe if Washington does acquire one, we get that pick, otherwise it becomes a 1st? If we don't get anything from that pick, it's bad.
1st from contenders are always mid-to-upper-twenties. That the draft class is weak is just bad luck.
Yes, Sanford is likely a 2nd/third liner, but those guys are useful. The more you have, the better the chance of one sticking, or they become trade bait later if you have too many. No one is giving up a top prospect for a rental anymore. Like in baseball, young players are the best way to build.
I didn't say this is the best trade ever, I'm saying its probably about as good as we can get right now. Can't change the past, and dwelling on possible Taylor Hall trades don't change the present.

what was pitt offering, that made DA say, nah you guys are out of the running. i have an ok/not great prospect on the table, possibly the last pick of the first round in the weakest draft class many have ever seen, and maybe a 2nd rounder on 2018...i'm still checking on if they even have that 2nd rounder. thanks for calling though!
