It's basically a horror movie about the criminal justice system. And a very good one.stlouie_lipp wrote:Just started it. Two episodes in and really liking it. Jay Pharoah and Taran Killam both dropped from SNL for the upcoming season. They also dropped Jon Rudnitsky, but I didn't figure anyone cared so much about that.

Re: TV Thread - beware, [expletive] can get spoilery
I'm enjoying the "Stranger Things" series. Not the best acting, (distressed overwrought Wynona seems a bit forced, but not a dealbreaker-) I am 3 in on episodes.
The main concern I have is it's similarities to a book I started reading and [expletive] canned, because it went completely into the " anything goes" implausibility territory too soon- "The Passage"
I understand - it is Sci Fi, so it's not supposed to be entirely plausible. But with Sci Fi, there are usually some constraints, or rule that the story has to fit into, even if those constraints themselves are implausible. In some regards, Sci Fi stories should be more constrained by the rules of the fake parameters than real-world stories.
Not sure I make sense with the above. Point is -good show, but worried it will go into "The Passage" territory too soon.

Dang. I'm surprised Kyle Mooney wasn't the one getting the boot.MrCrowesGarden wrote:Jay Pharoah and Taran Killam both dropped from SNL for the upcoming season. They also dropped Jon Rudnitsky, but I didn't figure anyone cared so much about that.
I much preferred Killam's Trump to Darryl Hammond's (Hammond's is fine, it's just seem kind of old and worn-out at this point), and I guess this means not a lot of Obama in his final months in office.

I enjoyed Stranger Things, but I'm an 80's kid that was about the same age as those kids when they are in 1983. The score and setting had me hooked. It wasn't great in any certain area, but I really enjoyed it.

The train tracks with Stand By Me was the obvious one while watching it. That and the bikes/ET connection. I certainly felt a Poltergeist vibe, too.TimeForGuinness wrote:That is pretty great (even if some were a stretch)

Might have to check it out since there's a lull in shows right now. I'm ready for Narcos to start back up next month.

The plot details in Stranger Things don't hold up well to scrutiny, but the focus is heavily on the characters and it's kind of beside the point. It's cool enough in the moment and there's not much time to dwell on it. Of course poor Barb kind of gets the shaft, story-wise.

I don't think they expected her character to be as popular as she was.ghostrunner wrote:The plot details in Stranger Things don't hold up well to scrutiny, but the focus is heavily on the characters and it's kind of beside the point.
