Theyve been promising Negan would kill a major character when he made his debut in the finale. He's got the whole group and does the Eeny Meeny Miny Moe to pick who it is, but they never showed who it was.

If it's someone like Aaron or Rosita, it's gonna be a big time letdown.

Good to see The Walking Dead is taking an active role in pissing off its viewers.

The ratings for this show are basically their Wrigley Field- a money-making crutch that means they don't have to give a [expletive] about their actual product for 108 years.

Not to bash the current Cubs, of course... but you get the point. Since approximately the mid 80s, they had a cash cow and a huge market and national following, so all they had to do was open the gates and make money regardless of how good they were on the field. Same thing here. This season was laughably bad.

It's horrible...they have so much promise with a show and they just can't execute (pun intended). It's not like they're writing anything from scratch, like Breaking Bad, etc. They have a [expletive] comic book as a reference, and they still can't figure it out. It's like they just aren't satisfied with shooting themselves in the foot, so they bring out a cannon to take their legs off in the season finale.

I've followed the Walking Dead, it's like pop-music for me...there might be a good single every now and then but the whole album is sub-par...but wow, I didn't think they were really that stupid and idiotic. I was wrong. This show is crap.

The comic book is probably part of the problem. They try to so hard to squish their dialogue and their plot into what happens in the comic instead of just making it the way it should be. Hell, you could even pretty easily hit MOST of the high points of the comics without doing it spot-on.

I think both of these spoilery reviews perfectly summarize how I feel about the show these days.

I still like the show plenty, but I don't see how they could've thought anyone would like that season finale.

the episode was great. the buildup was tense/every turn they took led them to a larger group, etc

the ending is what sucked ass, if they wouldn't have ended with that cliffhanger, it'd have been one of their best episodes ever IMO.

now we have to wait 6 months till the next season premiere, and all of that build-up/tension will be gone. just a dumb move.

not to mention, they have fans sneaking/taking set photos more than prob any other series on tv, so it'll leak out before next season by process of elimination; you can see who's not on the set anymore.

The AVclub is spot on...and I don't think the comic is part of the problem, I haven't even read them, but it should be part of their solution. I don't expect them to follow the comic page by page, there is room for adaption, but the writers are doing a horrible job. Forcing character arcs where none are needed, stretching everything out as much as they can, and cheesy dialogue/cliffhangers.

I think everything could have been fit into 4 or 5 seasons...and honestly, any show that goes longer than 5 seasons is probably stretching it out (unless it's current event satire...but even then the formula has to change after awhile).

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see the characters from Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead meet up in season 10.

I quit watching again a few episodes back, but I have to wonder if it was necessary to do the Negan story. I knew he was coming for a couple years, and wasn't looking forward to it. It seems to me like they've encountered every sort of sadist and awful situation possible - Merle, the Governor, Terminus, the hospital, the Wolves, that gang Daryl hooked up with, and now I guess this guy is notable for being the worst? I just wish the show had a "fun" gear it could stay in for more than half an episode. Sure, the world is now survival of the fittest. I'm just not sure I buy that sadists would rise to the top by default in every situation. It certainly isn't very entertaining, and it feels a bit stale.

I mean, starting a war, allowing a person to be decapitated, etc is all good as far as deflecting some of the attention from Hammerschmidt's article/informatoin. But, come on, you can't really expect for none of that info to do irreparable damage to the underwoods.

and, fwiw, one of the comments below mentions season 2 and that they ran out of their budget thus thats why they are on the farm for most of it. i'd never heard that before but might explain why that season was "slow" or less well received than others.
