Wouldn't you have to have bought tens of thousands of dollar of merchandise from Amazon to pay a $1300 Use Tax? Are you sure you didn't accidentally pay the tax as if it were the total price of the good purchased rather than just the sales tax (~0.06*$1300 = $78)?

Nope, it was $1300 worth of sales tax accrued over an entire year's purchases. Sales tax where I lived was also like 8.5%, so that just made it worse. They actually split it out and showed how much we purchased but had delivered to addresses in states that did not calculate Use Tax (i.e. shipping gifts to friends/family). Those goods were not included in the Use Tax.

We bought a TON of stuff on Amazon last year, because hey, it's cheaper and we won't pay sales tax! That backfired. Hard.

For example, we lived in a heavily trafficked and congested part of Columbia. Even Joe Biden referred to the intersection as "Malfunction Junction" when he stopped by en route to somewhere (I-26 and I-126). So because of that, we bought as much of our groceries as we could online through Prime Pantry. Plus a bunch of wedding stuff came from there.
