Re: Getting into shape
I've read recently that in training, a few times during the process you should go all out from the start and then suffer/fade your way to the finish. I can't fully remember what the logic is , - but I suspect it's just expanding your capacity to endure pain/suffering beyond what you thought you could.
It really is hard to get in all the things you are supposed to do to improve- which is why playing it by intuition is still important.
I haven't trained much specifically for a shorter distance, but almost always in training for a longer distance I'll semi/ unintenionally crash and burn by going out too fast (usually in the heat) and suffer my way back. As long as I don't injure myself in the process, I find it's beneficial -informative.

Re: Getting into shape
I am not a historian on him, but pretty sure negative splits (as referenced in that wiki article) wasn't what he was known for strategically. surely it was a byproduct at times, when he kicked it up a notch to hold off a competitor - but he was famous for going out fast and trying to lead from start to finish. Making it a guts race, as he called it, as opposed to a more frequent occurrence, where the field goes out conservatively (by their standards) and it comes down to who has the best kick.
everyone is diff. the split stuff is most applicable to racing against people. going nuts at the beginning of longer race because perceived effort seems less- can screw you up.

Re: Getting into shape
Finally started working out again. Long way to go to get back to where I was but at least the process has begun.

Re: Getting into shape
Thanks, Jim!
I'm feeling better - no symptoms except I still tire easily. Have to build up my endurance but so far the exercise has given me a little more energy. I'm doing half the time at half the speed of where I was before all this crap happened. I have to keep telling myself to be patient.
