Basketball played with intensity is tough for old men because of all of the short sprints. I would likely pull something before I got tired.

Dry January (no booze for a month) only partially worked out. I Had to break away from it mid-month for a good, but sad reason- Irish wake.

So instead of the ~ 60-70 beers I would have drank it was ~20.

It was a screwed up month with other stuff going on-back issue and a high cholestoral med so hard to get a full read on this.
Once I broke that pledge, the reset button seemed to work -it's not like I had a desire to slam a 6 pack and make up for lost time. Though some of this lack of thirst, I attribute to getting used to what I can handle with Lipitor (testing it out lately, I think my liver can handle processing 80mg of statin and a couple beers here or there).

I can definitely say I lost 6 lbs-which is a lot on my frame. This too might have some to do with more aerobic workout/less weights and [expletive] me pull ups! than cutting back on beer.

when not drinking, My time in the evening, was a little less zoning out in front of a screen. And more reading, or just hitting the hay at a better time.

It's a good thing to try. I recommend it. If anything, I found out my old drinking pattern, had some effects but really wasn't problematic.

fixed

Baseball is all about short sprints (well at least for us OF's) that are typically spread out nicely which works perfect for me.....basketball, not so much :P

Add in the fact that it was the first time I've actually played a basketball GAME for close to a decade, it showed in pretty much every aspect of the game. I've never been very good at basketball (other than being able to shoot a bit), but all in all it was fun getting out there and being active even if I suck.

I have been drinking more whisky and less beer because Im on a diet. Typically a shot and a beer instead of 3 beers. My shots are probably 3 oz or so.

I sip it actually. But a shot and a beer sounds better.

You can't take it back jim, I picture you slamming down a 3 oz. shot of whiskey and chasing it w/ a beer.

So on Thursday, I was playing basketball with my students and another teacher. Apparently when we both went for a rebound, the teacher, a mid-twenties guy, smacked his hand into my stomach. (I didn't feel it, and had assumed he jammed his thumb on the ball) He had to stop playing, and the next day his thumb was a little swollen.

Now there is a nice rumor going around about Mr. JCShutout's abs of steel. I feel bad because he's a good guy and a friend, but I feel awesome because, well, that's fraking awesome.

The problem with baseball is it's sit around sit around sit around RUN REALLY FAST SOMEWHERE RIGHT NOW. That is not good for old men. I was 48 the last time I played, and I kid you not I re-tweaked a hammy getting up the dugout steps. I originally tweaked it early in the year just catching a high pop foul on a windy day, I had to make a quick reaction and boom - hamstring.

When I was playing I was constantly moving, jumping up and down between pitches, stretching .. whatever I could do to stay lose.

...

Great story jc. That is pretty awesome. Let that story grow a little and you can talk about how you broke his thumb with your abs.
