Re: Getting into shape
I'm no expert but w mile being middle distance I'd think you'd do some fast paced quarters maybe. Wondering if running hills would help. This time of year hard to do for sure.

Re: Getting into shape
That's what I am thinking. I was thinking of Mon doing 1/4 mile intervals, Wed doing 1/2 mile intervals, and then Friday doing a full mile. Given my age related frailty, hills aren't good. I would prob do 1.5 miles worth of intervals. Keep it to 2 miles per day at the most. Again, frailty.
I was so pumped after watching Creed yesterday until I stood up out of my chair. I almost went right back down again. Pain right through my hip.

This traction thing has been key. Not completely recovered, but for purposes of running-not a problem. Being able to move & stay active (in a sensible way) seems to make the meds flow thru more efficiently. These awful stories with prednisone-it could be that dosing it to someone who is unable to move around and circulate it well is a complicating factor.
Ran 9 on trails today in 6 degrees. Mostly able to stay warm. Could have worn better gloves. A little worrisome about the dude staying warm too. But ok.

Wife's dog loves this cold. Want to take him w you?
You think hills would increase chance of injury? I have fewer issues w knees going uphill but more strength gain.

Re: Getting into shape
I don't know, there is a stadium near here with maybe 30-ish rows and I used to do stairs there. I stopped this summer because my knees were hurting. Just to give you an idea of my knee situations - you know the chair position in yoga where you put your hands over your head and bend your knees like you are sitting in an imaginary chair? Can't do it. It feels like bone on bone. Running in general is not good for me. I do a lot of spinning for cardio - 2 classes or so per week plus I'll just do my own routine a couple of times. Boring as hell but it doesn't hurt.
I need to jack up my core workouts. Any good ideas there?

Re: Getting into shape
For me the knee pain comes when I'm going down the stairs/hills. Not up.
I'm screwed up bc I had a torn acl for several yrs before finally getting surgery and got into terrible habits avoiding that left knee. Never really corrected it and paying for it now. Soft tissue issues w hip, QL, glute, etc Get spasming and cramping that really makes working out difficult.
Hoping that what I'm doing w heat and stretching and massage etc will do some good.

Core -I like this sort of stability stuff- geared towards runners-but pretty safe-can be done anywhere.
I don't do it nearly enough. Not sure if this is on the link but I like taking a heavy ball-take it from a lunge to a running pose with ball overhead. Planks of course. Sit-ups seem to be out of vogue.

I never had issue with downhill, but you are right-it hurts the joints. There are some good quad shock absorber exercises can't find a link.
Downhill running, knock on wood-is probably my strength and where I notice I catch up some to others -and it doesn't hurt. Even if you have knee problems, you still Have to learn to relax going downhill. Let gravity do the work. Putting on the brakes going downhill causes more pain and pounding. Look further ahead when running downhill-your eyes will register the nearby obstacles..., when you look straight down, you can't relax.

Hills are the [expletive] worst. We live in a subdivision where in one mile we go up, down, up, down, etc over 450 feet or some bull [expletive] like that. Easier to run 2 miles flat than 1 mile at 10%, guaranteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed!

Also, here's the ultimate ironman.
Take
these 4 numbers: 6, 12, 18, 24
These 4 categories: Jerking off, eating donuts, drinking beer, running/walking miles
And assign each category to a number and accomplish them all in 24 hours.

6 JOs
12 miles
18 donuts
24 beers
The donuts would be the most difficult for me, I think.
