kinda crazy to think that NASA wasn't able to figure out a way to do this already

Re: Outer Space Thread
I'd be curious if that's true. I suspect that NASA probably could have figured that out if it was a priority, but given a limited budget AND a desire to push the boundaries going forward, spending 5-10 years (whatever) on designing a better technology for takeoffs (which they already have) might have been viewed as not worth it from a PR standpoint.go birds wrote:kinda crazy to think that NASA wasn't able to figure out a way to do this already
I don't know, but i just have a hard time believing NASA wasn't able to figure it out as much as they didn't care to figure it out...though I obviously have nothing to back that up.

That really is a pretty amazing feat.

Anyway, yes. That is an amazing feat. Musk is an amazing person; everything he touches turns to gold.IMADreamer wrote:That really is a pretty amazing feat.

yea i didnt mean to discredit the feat, i just didnt know the significance. i guess i never really thought about the fact a rocket has never been landed successfully until yesterday.
and yea NASA probably already thought about it, but just seems like they would have explored it, especially considering cost savings measures in the long run.

Re: Outer Space Thread
That'd be the rub right there. NASA is so dependent on getting short term funding from a bunch of anti-science nutjobs that a larger up-front cost for long term savings is counterproductive to them.go birds wrote:yea i didnt mean to discredit the feat, i just didnt know the significance. i guess i never really thought about the fact a rocket has never been landed successfully until yesterday.

I'm pretty sure SpaceX hired several key guys from NASA as well.

Now they are saying that star with the weird dimming pattern has been getting dimmer for over 100 years. It's 20% dimmer today than 1890. Yes, they went back and looked at old observational data of that part of the sky since 1890.
