I had never really thought about this. I've heard it of course, (but didn't really notice it) but didn't know it was a thing.

Unless I'm mistaken, guys vocal fry all the time. Why is it okay for them but so terrible for women?

Nope, super common for straight guys to use it as well; Ira Glass, for example, has the worst vocal fry that I've heard. Harassing women instead of men with regards to how their voice sounds is a thing, better seen and not heard and whathaveyous.
