you can compete, virtually. I.e. I've got the 273rd fastest bike ride from Frisco to Breckenridge.
MapMyRide is kind of cool too (sorry if it's been discussed in this thread already); it plots the route you rode on a map using GPS. One feature I really like is, every mile you ride, you'll get an audio update. "You are now at 1.0 miles...", "you are now at 2.0 miles". Every time it gives you an update, it tells you what pace you rode the last mile at, as well as your overall time. Collectively, it sounds something like this:
*music automatically pauses*
"You are now at 1.0 miles. Split speed: 15.4 miles per hour. Total time: 4 minutes, 55 seconds."
*music resumes*
...
*music automatically pauses*
"You are now at 2.0 miles. Split speed: 14.9 miles per hour. Total time: 9 minutes, 37 seconds."
*music resumes*
...
etc
Kind of reminds me of Garmin, in the sense that you can "compete" with yourself to to try to improve those splits speeds during a ride. At the end, you get an overall breakdown as well, which is really neat. I live in the plains, and there is very routinely brutal wind. It's neat seeing the effect wind has on my split speeds (right around mile 8 I hit a crosswind, and mile 10 was a headwind):
