Urban Chestnut is now bottlin several of their better beers for the market -instead of the lesser swills - Winged Nut Schnicklepo0pp.. Been so long since I've had their Hopfen, which IIRC was a decent turn on IPAs. Enjoying the German Altbier - Schlsosttttotutrmrmrffmmrurm right now. yum. I know it's sacrilege but I could drink their October beer Oachalaaofadsfwahlooaaaafe all year long.

That's how I am with Schlafly's Pumpkin Ale. My mom couldn't think of anything to get me for Xmas last year, so she bought me four cases of Pumpkin Ale. I was down to one case left by early February and I think I was finally burned out of it by that point. Can't wait to open that last case up in a few months though.

I really like Urban Chestnut, they just came into the IL market recently. I'm happy that they're doing a lot of old-school German styles and are not pumping out IPA after IPA after IPA. Especially with summer coming, I'd far rather have something dry and light than a big ol hop-bomb.

The [expletive]'saloaf is a pretty damn good Okto.

And I agree with your assessment, 33. It kind of makes them less "special" in that they don't swing for the fences with wacky experimental products, but they've carved out a solid/simple niche and they fill it well. And they have gobs of money, too, which is sort of a separate thought not pertaining to quality. More about exposure.

I've been pleasantly surprised to find a lot of Perennial products here in DC.

Which area did you move to, JL? DC area or actual Baltimore proper? Either way, there are two Total Wine stores (one in northern Baltimore, the other in between Baltimore and DC). If you've not been to one of them yet, you really owe it to yourself to go to one. Future Mrs. Swirls and I call it Mecca for a reason. http://www.totalwine.com

I've mentioned it in this thread before - 2k types of wine and 1k types of beer. Tons and tons of spirits also.

if I'm getting a hoppy beer - I prefer it in summer. The citrusy thing. Though I don't make it a rule.
No doubt, there is an infiltration of overhopped crappy beers - even ones that don't call themselves IPAs. I've seen my own tastes backtrack from them.

There are still some good ones (IPAs) out there. On a recent trip to the crafty beer shop, I bought some old favorites like Rogue Hazelnut Brown and Ayinger Celebrator, and threw in a Deschutes Freshly Squeezed IPA. The IPA, I drank first.

Related note - I don't care for flower-tasting beer. Turns out some beers not just brewed to taste flowery, but are indeed brewed with flowers. This has nothing to do with machismo - but that just sounds bad.

Ayinger Celebrator is so clutch. Love that beer.
