Re: Random musings
I was a whiz in college with Rubik's cube - could get it in under 2 minutes. In August '81 before I went to college me and 7 buddies went down to Daytona Beach (mike was there) in a pickup with a camper on it. I sat in the back of that truck trying to figure that thing out the entire way down and the entire way back. When I started college I kept at it, the lightbulb finally went on and I saw the pattern, and then it was actually pretty easy. The key is to know the center cubes don't rotate.

I was like, 9 and apparently someone before me got to the "instructions". I never saw a package. I would love to get a brand new cube and read the instructions so I could find out if was regular stupid or super stupid.

The fact that ISIS kidnaps and beheads peasants instead of world leaders proves they are funded and supported by the CIA.

the instructions werent very intuitive. it blows my mind that someone could figure it out on their own.docellis wrote:I was like, 9 and apparently someone before me got to the "instructions". When I worked in minor league baseball, I worked with a dude named Dirty Al Gallagher who swore up and down that Clete Boyer farted better than anyone he'd ever met.
You owe it to yourself to at least try it. And get it on a dog at Skyline (or at the Skyline stand at the ballpark) with the cheese.Radbird wrote:I wonder if I ever visit Cincinnati, will I try the chili?

I don't know what you all are talking about. What instructions? I don't remember any instructions, at least on how to solve it.Schlich wrote:the instructions werent very intuitive. it blows my mind that someone could figure it out on their own.docellis wrote:I was like, 9 and apparently someone before me got to the "instructions". I haven't looked at one in so long I've forgotten the pattern, but I remember working on the corners first. Get the four corners the same color as the center tile, and then you can rotate the middle row (and column) without [expletive] up the corners. You might have to temporarily displace a corner to shift something around, but you can get it right back. I can tell you that once I figured it out I wondered why it took me (and everyone else) so long.

Re: Random musings
Those years destroyed my bank account, my credit, and my dream of working for a MLB team completely evaporated in just 3 years, but I wouldn't trade my years working in baseball for anything.
Dirty himself was a legend. He got his name- Dirty- in college. He had a 20+ game hitting streak and refused to wash any part of his uniform as long as the streak was alive. And it became a self-fulfilling prophecy from that point forward in his career.
He was a really great dude- a genuinely good human being in every way- but he was disgusting as hell. His uniform had a giant chew stain drizzled down the front. As a MiLB coach, he was the third base coach during games. At our ballpark, the sun set down the 1B line. When the setting sun was just right, Dirty would squat down in the 3B coach box and you could see the sun accentuating the poop stains on his home whites. He had his own personal stories about everyone from Leo Mazzone to Clete Boyer to Dale Murphy to Hank Aaron to Frank Robinson, even Willie Mays and McCovey (both former teammates). Dirty is the reason I once spoke to Bobby Cox on the phone, if only for a moment to take down the message that Dirty should give him a call.
