I saw the high today back in Iowa where I lived before moving to NY was -9, the low is -17, with a wind chill tonight approaching -50.

I will admit that I do not miss the bitter cold at all. I will take 300 inches of snow a year with perhaps a few days that drop into the single digits (thankfully living right next to that giant lake keeps us a little bit warmer) to the cold dryness of central/northern Iowa.

I received an advisory today from the National Weather Service here in Columbia:
NWS wrote:The National Weather Service Office in Columbia has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for the Midlands of South Carolina from midnight tonight until 9:00 AM on Thursday morning.

Bitterly cold Arctic Air from Canada will begin to filter into the midlands of South Carolina this evening. Temperatures will begin to fall rapidly after sunset with low temperatures reaching the middle teens by Thursday morning. This combined with windy conditions will create a wind chills ranging from 0 to 5 above late tonight into early Thursday morning. Take precautions in order to get ready for this bitterly cold weather event. South Carolinians are not used to this type of cold and many of us (including myself) don't wear gloves nor do I have a winter hat. If you do have these items, be prepared to use them tonight and Thursday. Wind chills this low can be dangerous, possibly leading to hypothermia. Arctic high pressure over the northern plains this morning will build down into the Southeast on Thursday with high temperatures on Thursday struggling to reach our normal low temperature for this time of the year. Highs on Thursday may barely break freezing which is 20 to 25 degrees below normal.

The upper-level flow will go zonal ahead of another short wave dropping southward. This will lead to moderating temperatures on Friday; however, temperatures will remain below normal.
Bitterly cold, ya'll.

See, I like that. It's a reminder of how nice and warm it is inside. I pull my comforter up and fall asleep in a nice warm bed.

I woke up at 5:00 am with what I thought were screeching pipes. I was sure the entire water system in my house had seized up and pipes were about ready to start exploding. As I went downstairs I lost the sound, after about 5 minutes I gave up but was about 75% sure it was coming from outside. This morning, I heard it - some weird sound coming from my neighbors house.

I put some ear plugs in and tried to get back to sleep, but I couldn't.
