I guess I should have posted in music talk. Anyway one of the other nurses told her it was rude to disrespect the hostess's views in her own house. My wife had no idea this person liked wars or associated wars with her political point of view or would take personally anything by a bunch of drunk women singing karaoke. This society really is a big fail. Plus, isn't the hostess supposed to make the guests comfortable?

I would have immediately gotten up and sang the song again.

Who the hell is pro war anyway? None of that story makes any sense. Is that really the first time she's ever heard the song? Even if she was from a big military family you would think she could understand the song wasn't meant to trivialize their contributions. She sounds crazy if that legitimately bothered her.

A couple of years ago, I taught Ambrose Bierce's short story "Chickamauga," which is a staunchly anti-war story written by someone who fought at the Battle of Chickamauga during the Civil War. It's really about the horror of war, and is frank about the violence and gruesomeness, and very sour about jingoism and people who celebrate war without thinking about its consequences. Well, one student decided he didn't want to be an English major any more, because he didn't want to ever read stories that conflicted with his political belief about the necessity of military might.

Mind you, I don't think Bierce was apologizing for his service during the Civil War. But whatever. The guy wound up bouncing from major to major, and ultimately transferred from the university.

On the other hand, bitterness about the Vietnam War is still prevalent for some people, and it could be that that triggered the hostess' response. Still, you'd think she'd blame the song, not the singers.
