Re: Book thread
Have been mired in reading David James Duncan's "The Brother's K" for a couple months. It's a meander thru a family life back in 50-60s. The baseball stuff in it is pretty good, and sometimes the book's harpooning of religion is enjoyable. It's well-written -though the narrative voice is sometimes hard to make sense of. Too ambitious and has been a struggle for my ever-shortening attention span to finish.

Re: Book thread
From my list of people I'd like to have a drink with - William Least Heat-Moon has a speaking gig at our rec center next week.
He even has a drink recipe.
Pappy Van Winkle on the Rocks:
Several smooth *rocks form the bottom of the Missouri River, washed and placed in the ice cube section of freezer for a couple hours. Yes, I know, but stick around; it eventually makes some weird kind of sense.
4 ozs Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve Bourbon (20yr)
select rocks, and put into glass. Add bourbon and enjoy. The drink will stay cold without becoming diluted.
*rocks from Colorado River, Fire Island, Tuckernut Island, Grand Canyon, Acapulco Bay etc may be substituted.

I read a lot of spanish language stuff, and I recently bought a book with a collection of short stories of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. You can find these all in English pretty easily I think - Eyes of a Blue Dog and The Women who Came at Six I read this week. Really good stuff - the dream stuff in Eyes of a Blue Dog was pretty cool.

I can't read anything non-English, but talking of Spanish language authors I read Roberto Bolano's "2666" a while ago, and it was great.
After having just finished a pile of sci-fi books, I saw Russell Brand's tweet where he showed a photo of the books he was reading, presumably to help arm himself against the critics who are already calling for his head for daring to be more than a former druggie comedian actor; and one of them was Trotsky's "History of the Russian Revolution". I own it, and it's been sat daring me to read it for years, so I thought I'd give it a go. After a week, I am still on the preface...yet I've seen 6 different SyFy Channel original movies in that time. Time to knuckle down.

Re: Book thread
2666 is quite the trip. Half a story about a long-forgotten starving artist, half the fictionalized account of the hundreds of murders of the maquiladora girls in Ciudad Juarez. If I recall, Bolano was either dying already when he wrote it, or died not long after. It's a haunting book.Famous Mortimer wrote:I can't read anything non-English, but talking of Spanish language authors I read Roberto Bolano's "2666" a while ago, and it was great.
Welcome to GRB, Mortimer. I hope your name derives from Bill Cosby's magical pen in Picture Pages. If not, I'm going to go on pretending that's the case anyway.

I read and enjoyed that one as a teen, too. He has some Missouri connection, right?Vidor wrote:Read "Blue Highways" years and years ago. I've been using the name on forums for so long that I sometimes forget that I didn't think of it. It turns out that some weirdo gaming "insider" who trolled a bunch of sites has been using the same name.
And thanks! If I say anything truly out of left field, just mark it down to me being English, and only being a Cardinals fan since 2008 (I have the good fortune of being married to a St Louis native).
