I guess just having spent so much time in Wisco it is just weird for me to hear praise heaped on Leinenkugel like that. I'm not commenting on the beer, just sensing that it's reputation seems to grow exponentially the further one gets from Chippewa Falls.

Re: The Beer Thread
Very true. And it wasn't always that way. When I was living there 15 years ago, it was basically their Schlafly- a local go-to option you could enjoy Wisconsinibly. Hell, my best friend up there worked with one of the Leinenkugel grandkids, who was in school at UW.jim wrote:I guess just having spent so much time in Wisco it is just weird for me to hear praise heaped on Leinenkugel like that. Then somewhere along the line, New Glarus really took off and became known outside of Wisconsin, Capital and some of the other locals got big in the state, and Miller started interfering with the Leinie line. They started peddling crappy pseudo-chick beers with fruit and [expletive] in them and ignoring the home market.
I know that sounds like I'm insulting Leinie's, but I still like plenty of their beers just fine (including gobirds' porter). I just resent that the only options I can find in STL are the horrible fruity crap. I still like Leinie's Original and it's not easy to get, which is stupid because it's their easiest drinking and best option.

Leiny's original around here is priced exactly the same as Busch. Is it like that in St. Louis?

Re: The Beer Thread
I don't even know where you can find it in STL. I'm sure some of the liquor mega-stores like Randall's and Friar Tuck's have it, but:
1. nobody goes to a liquor mega-store to buy something like Leinie's Original, even if I like it
2. I know I can't get it at any of the three Schnucks close to my home and work, or the Dierberg's, or the smaller liquor stores close to me

No, they just try to pawn off Kraptig as the alternative here.jim wrote:Leiny's original around here is priced exactly the same as Busch. Is it like that in St. Louis?
the options at our Schnucks and are often dumbfounding. I still lookout for that Leines cream dark beer, and all I find is cranberry something. 4 Hands must be paying for shelf space. Cathedral...meh. And damn it UCBC, bottle something different.

Re: The Beer Thread
I agree with you on some of their specialty beers--like the one they have now--cranapple grape or whatever. That sounds awful and i refuse to even try it, regardless of how much i like Leiney's. Although their orange shandy is quite tasty and a nice summer beer.JL21 wrote:Very true. And it wasn't always that way. and jim--they are typical craft beer prices around here (nashville)--i think like $15.99 for a 12 pack.

Re: The Beer Thread
I looked at the Synek quite a bit, but ultimately passed because it was so goddamn expensive. The two things serve, to me, two distinctly different yet similar niches. One is basically a miniature kegerator that sits on your kitchen counter and lets you quickly swap out different "kegs," and the other is more geared towards portability and ease of use/storage. The Synek is also literally three times the cost of the uKeg - for the price of the Synek why not just get a cheap kegerator instead and hold a lot more beer?Hoot45 wrote:I'm new to this thread so please pardon me if this has been discussed already, but did anyone get in on the Synek kickstarter? This thing is way cooler than the pressurized growler and it is made in St. Louis. I bought one and can't wait for it to hopefully deliver sometime in the spring.Swirls wrote:Shameless plug/advertisement, although it seems quite applicable to the beer discussion, especially for those of us who like buying craft beer in growler form:

I'd copy and paste the main picture on here, but I'm not that smart.

EDIT: Also, if you're at all confident on their ability to ship on time, then I'm going to venture a guess that you haven't bought much stuff on Kickstarter. I've backed almost 50 projects, and I've had well under 10% of them deliver anything close to the estimated date - especially ones that absolutely shatter their funding goal. I've got one project that's over a year late and they haven't even begun production yet (which will be done in China and transported to the US via ocean freighter), so it still easily has several more months until I receive it at my doorstep. VERY few projects are delivered on time, although it does happen from time to time.

Re: The Beer Thread
Leinie's Red and Original are OK, but I never buy Leinie's unless it's the only non-Busch/Miller/crap on tap. I agree that it used to be better. In the stores here, it's just a little cheaper (and not always) than Summit or Sierra Nevada or something else I like better. Come to think of it, I almost always buy Summit or Sierra Nevada because my liquor store has such a great deal on both - 10.99 for a 12-er. Sometimes I buy Grain Belt, but that's just a few times a year and mostly in the summer.JL21 wrote:Very true. And it wasn't always that way. I like the Red but I think the Original tastes - well like the original stuff. Not original formula, but original as in it's been sitting in the original vat for 50 years. It has that MGD dirty water taste to me.
