Re: The Beer Thread
Maybe that's what I do too, I just know I'm not really smelling the beer that I can tell. I definitely could not tell the difference in taste. I've done the same thing with some beers with can/bottle, and also can not tell the difference, but I certainly enjoy drinking out of a bottle more. I'm sure the same thing is drinking it out of a glass for some people. It's real, it makes a difference, I'm just not so sure taste is the sense that is being improved by drinking from can/bottle/glass. Maybe, I guess if you had sensitive taste buds which I apparently do not maybe having the beer "breath" would change it some.
I dunno'. Do what you want I suppose.

So you're color blind and have no sense of smell either?

Re: The Beer Thread
bottle vs glass wouldn't be much different for Spotted Cow, it's pretty light. The carbonation in the bottle may be preferred.
Spotted Cow is good - helped drain a keg of it at my nephew's wedding. Yet, I like other New Glarus products more. Bud product-drinking family/friends are smitten by it. It's a good gateway craft beer.

Re: The Beer Thread
I uh picked up one of those mix'n match 6 packs from Kroger over the weekend. Schlafly oktoberfest was by far the best of the 6, but I don't even think that was as good as a stella.

Spotted Cow is decent and their signature beer, but nowhere near the best in their lineup. I don't know why I always pick a six of it up though. Two Women is one of my favorites from them.

Re: The Beer Thread
I think of Spotted Cow as the best possible version of a simple, easy drinking beer. It's not crazy complex with subtle flavors and it's not exactly a "wow" kind of beer in the same way that a good stout or marzen or IPA might be. It's kind of the antidote to, say, a place like Dogfish Head.* The same goes for the Capital Supper Club.
jim, you might try it with their Staghorn, DEFINITELY with the Dancing Man Wheat (my favorite beer), the Coffee Stout, or the Cabin Fever.
*not to badmouth Dogfish because they kick ass, too. It's just in very different ways.
If I'm ranking my favorite New Glaruseseses, I'd go:
1. Dancing Man
2. Cabin Fever
3. Uff Da Bock
4. tie- Cow and Staghorn
5. Yokel
And then special nods to the Apple Ale and the Fat Squirrel.

Re: The Beer Thread
I'll be back up there in 2 weeks, so I'll give Staghorn a trie. DMW - had it, agree it's better than most wheat beers, but not a fan of wheat beers. Capital Supper Club I actually *dis*like. I think it's kind of nasty. I haven't had the Stout either, maybe I should do that. Love Cabin Fever, Yokel is one of my favorites when I can find it. Fat Squirrel I am not a huge fan of.
With NG I would probably go:
1. Two Women
2. Yokel
3. Cabin Fever.
4. Totally Naked
5. Cow.

Re: The Beer Thread
NG seem to have higher portion of beers rolled out as seasonals than most brewers. Excluding the fruit beers -their only year-rounders are Moon Man, Spotted Cow, 2 Women.jim wrote:I'll be back up there in 2 weeks, so I'll give Staghorn a trie. This seems to work for them marketing-wise, especially since they are good enough brewer to get customers to follow that agenda. While drinking what is season, I'm always lusting for something of theirs that isn't out yet.
Cabin Fever is great. Also, their Uff-da (Bock/regular beer) isn't made very much, but I like it. Moon Man is pretty good for a hoppier beer. Seems like if I mix in a Moon Man with other beers, the Moon Man isn't good. That's pretty much true for all hoppy beers for me, mixed with wrong food or other drink, it can be like drinking OJ after brushing my teeth.
I've only had a few Lake Louie beers, and have liked them. Big fan of their Scottish Ale - Warped Speed.
anybody been to The Grumpy Troll in Mt. Horeb?

Re: The Beer Thread
Sort of. I only went for the fried cheese turds, which were amazing. I don't even remember what I drank but I don't think it was anything special.Freed Roger wrote:anybody been to The Grumpy Troll in Mt. Horeb?
As for New Glarus, I think they used to have a lot more that you could get year round. It seems like you can get the Fat Squirrel and the Yokel most times of the year.
jim, I'm kind of bummed that you don't like the Supper Club. I thought that'd be right up your alley. If nothing else, you have to appreciate what it's all about. They're basically saying, "[expletive] you and your over-hopped nonsense, [expletive] all of your subtle flavors. This is simply beer like your dad drank."
