I could do without the comments that the only reason why someone would choose a particular bourbon is because they are a clueless suburbanite or that failing to heed the advice of some whiskey conosouir means you a living in a small box, but otherwise, sure, being obsessively interested in the details a niche like bourbon drinking ought to be something that is all in good fun, I agree.lukethedrifter wrote:Of course it is, but so is being a dick toward a guy who is telling another guy that he should enjoy the bourbon whichever way he decides he likes it.Arthur Dent wrote:Using the word stupidity to describe not being concerned about expert advice in matters of taste is rather extreme.
Your comment would have more validity if 33 were the one telling people that they were drinking it all wrong.

Re: Rant/Rave: Bourbon
When I handled the marketing for a fancy country club I swear the passion for wine was a contest that was an ongoing and sometimes vitriolic exercise between members, the staff and the "board of governors".
Then, we also had traveling wine sales persons who came almost daily with samples. It was the only time in my life that I was quite often drunk at work.
But it was interesting to see the politics of spirits. The most wealthy, longest tenured club member would only listen to the clubhouse manager (a black man who had been with the club for 30+ years) despite the general manager being a level 100,000 sommelier. (sp)
It was weird how angry people would get over wine.

Re: Rant/Rave: Bourbon
I thought this whole thread was tongue and cheek with some good advice mixed in from trill, 33, and haltz. One of the great things about bourbon is that you can experience different tastes from the same bourbon by just adding ice, water, or stones...or mixing into a cocktail. Craft, big-company, etc...it's all good to me, and each has their own place in my collection.jim wrote:People just goofing around. If this were gateway whiskey drinkers then people would have probably taken the thread more seriously. You don't see this silliness in the baseball discussions generally. I post a goofy picture poking fun at someone with some heart shaped ice shapes, and then the next post is a dissertation on pick axes and ice harvesting. Of course people are going to comment on that. And then I make an obvious joke to haltz - at least I think it was - a person I've been talking to for almost 10 years, and then I get a lecture. Every single thing I said in this thread was tounge in cheek. Why would I honestly care how drink something?
To the guy(s) that lectured me: [expletive] you. Seriously, [expletive] you.
If haltz had a problem with anything I said I'm sorry to him. I know the guy knows food and drink and baseball, three things more than someone else in this thread knows about and two things more than I know. trill too, and jl21. I have learned from this thread.
But seriously, [expletive] you.
And [expletive] I can't type and I have to keep fixing this stupid [expletive] post.

We're all having fun, no? Middle is an expert so maybe taking it more seriously than the rest of us, but that's ok. I appreciate his expertise and have even figured out how to make some dense as [expletive] ice chunks for my bourbon thanks to him, so I love it.
My weekend bourbons involve a coleman cooler, a small saw, a chisel and a hammer now.

I just assumed a cooler, saw, chisel and hammer were part of all your weekend activities.trill wrote:We're all having fun, no? Thrill told me that in confidence. I'm sorry for giving away trade secrets.

BTW, I missed this sentence the first time around when I was drinking High Life and Jameson at the bar last night. If what you said could possibly hurt my feelings then I would have quit working in restaurants years ago. I made the obvious joke right back, which is that you drink grandmother whiskey in the most boring way possible. Next time you're in town, have a seat at my bar and try and walk out after I make you a couple of frou-frou weird cocktails on the house.jim wrote: And then I make an obvious joke to haltz - at least I think it was - a person I've been talking to for almost 10 years, and then I get a lecture.
