Ok, so I just picked up a bottle of Buffalo Trace. Will one of you cool kids tell me how you're supposed to drink this stuff? I'm a total noob.

Play around with it and get what you like, then drink it that way and to hell with what anyone else tells you that you should be doing. If you're enjoying it your way you're doing it right.

Only if moron means a probably smart and good person who is spending money on marketing instead of craft and who probably enjoys the taste but could have their eyes opened to better stuff.

If you don't have a bottle of 2002 George T. Stagg, then you have not lived.

Thirds knows everything about everything on the internets.

letsgocards: My advice is 1) open bottle 2) pour into a glass 3) sip. I like to keep things simple. Apparently this is not correct though.

I devised a three-step process for attempting to determine my preferred way of consuming bourbon.
1)Pour it, sip it
2)Add water
3)Add ice

Results:

Open bottle, pour, sip. BT tastes smooth. I have no palette for this stuff so I don't get berries or oak or pixie dust flavors, but it drinks smooth. Like. Good starting point.

Ok, let's add a few drops of water. Supposedly that "brings out the flavors." Add water, sip. OH MY GOD WHAT HAVE I DONE?! Wow, ok, now it tastes like alcohol. Definitely brings out flavor, but man, it was an alcohol flavor.

Wait, come sip more. Still very flavorful, but didn't catch me as off guard. Still not picking up the subtle hint of unicorn horn or rainbow flake, but I can see why people like adding water.

I didn't get to step 3, I drank it all by then. :)

Summary: My palette needs some work, but all in all I like it. I'll probably experiment with water and water-free bourbon but BT is definitely a good drink.

He knows a hell of a lot about spirits and cocktails; not sure why anyone would his panties in a bunch over Thirds comments in this thread.

I don't get any of that unicorn fart smell berry banana coffee flavor crap from any drink. I was a wine tour in Sonoma this summer and we were on this tour and we took a sip of some wine and the guy asked what boquet we were getting. He looked at me directly and I replied "pears". He then raised his eyebrows and nodded in semi-agreement, and then asked me why I said "pears". I replied I said pears because whenever anyone swirls and sips wine they say it tastes like pears.

Didn't taste like no mother [expletive] pear or apple or cherry or any other thing. It tasted kind of like a crappy glass of white wine.
