I did have my dates wrong, a total eclipse in 1979 sliced through the upper Northwest.

This is a pretty nifty Google Maps tool that allows you to click on anywhere and get local conditions.

Looks like totality will be at 11:17 am St. Louis time.

Where do you see that? I get maximum eclipse on 2017/08/21 @ 18:18:11.6 UTC, which is +5 from CT at that point, meaning 13:18 = 1:18pm. No?

Is it +5? My bad, you're correct.

Anyway, as the map shows the zone just barely touches the city, so anyone who isn't stuck at work would be better advised to take a little drive south and west.

Interesting article on Earth seeding life elsewhere:
It’s worth noting that Earth’s most epic impacts also launch the most life-filled debris into space. The impact at Chicxulub, Mexico roughly 66 million years ago—widely believed to have caused the mass extinction of the dinosaurs—flung about 70 billion kilograms of rock into space. Some 20,000 kg of this rock could have reached Europa. Chances that a rock big enough to harbor life reached the icy moon are better than 50/50, Worth says.

I can't recall if they talked about this exact scenario with Earth & Europa, but they did discuss on Cosmos this idea that life on other planets could have seeded life here and vice versa. They have even identified some kind of bacteria that could survive in the cold and vacuum of space, and they think can even hold up against cosmic rays and radiation.

A group of scientists from Harvard and the Smithsonian claim they have evidence of gravity waves that would have accompanied the Big Bang. Way over my head, but it says gravity waves are predicted by Einstein's Theory of Relativity but we never observed evidence of them until now:

Or maybe it's just interstellar dust:

A scale model of the solar system if the Moon were only 1 pixel.
If this map was printed on a quality printer (300 pixels per inch), the Earth would be invisible, and the width of the paper would need to be 475 feet.
