The strength anaerobic exercise burns carbs/glycogen. It is a major component of exercise, but not the chief factor in training your body to burn fat efficiently. Injure yourself doing strength [expletive], then where is an out of shape person. So a pt may help with strength training. Elliptical kicks as. Swimming is great.Schlich wrote:^^^ follow that advice for food. If you enjoy cardio activities, do sprint sets/HIIT (plyometrics and stuff). Or if you like lifting weights, then buy the book Starting Strength and read it, it's a short easy read, and will teach you most all you need to know for th6
Don't waste your time with jogging or the elliptical unless you really enjoy it. You get a lot more bang for your buck with the above workouts.

Yeah, absolutely. But it's better than sitting on your ass, easy to make progress with, and more efficient (time-wise) than low intensity cardio. And it's a lot more fun IMO.The strength anaerobic exercise burns carbs/glycogen. It is a major component of exercise, but not the chief factor in training your body to burn fat efficiently
You won't injure yourself if you do it right. If you do your research, you'll do it right.
If you enjoy the elliptical then great for you but it's just not the most efficient form of excercise and if you hate exercise like most out of shape people then the elliptical is not a great place to start.
Swimming is very great. Do HIIT while you swim.

Re: Getting into shape
Thanks for all the suggestions. As far as exercise, there is literally nothing I "enjoy," so I guess it comes down to, as Joce put it, what I hate the least. That's walking and jogging, so what I'm going to do is just make a concerted effort to make sure I do it every day for long enough periods of time. Along with tracking calories. That part should be easier, as my diet is awesome and healthy and nutritious most of the day, before I usually break down and get a little crazy at night. I never drink soda, only water and occasionally coffee, but the chips and ice cream lure me in. Binge eating and watching TV at night seem to go hand-in-hand for me, so maybe I need to kill 2 birds with one stone there...

Get the MLB app and listen to the broadcast while you walk or jog. See how many innings you can last.

Re: Getting into shape
I may have already added this in the previous 36 pages, but since it's working for me again I'll re-state it. I've had very good results with the following:
- Avoiding carbs as much as possible Sunday - Friday. Freed's favorite person Tim Ferriss simplifies this the best with idea that if a carb 'is or can be white, don't eat it'. This means meals heavy in protein, nuts/legumes to help feel full, and I've also experimented a bit with some protein bars as quick snacks. The biggest difficulty is getting over the original hump of feeling hungry quite a bit. After a week or two you're better able to adjust and it's a matter of making sure you don't crash because it's a lot easier to under-feed yourself on that regimen than the opposite.
- Eating whatever I want on Saturday. Pizza, fries, chocolate, ice cream, whatever. This helps give you something to look forward to during the week(willpower truly is the hardest part), and keeps your metabolism from going down.
- Going on long walks. I'll walk for 40 mins to an hour, most of the time in the evening. If you like to listen to stuff JoD's suggestion of listening to baseball games is a great one, I've done that in the past. More recently I just let my mind wander, it's a great way to decompress and the motion of walking can help keep the anxieties of life away as you just let your brain walk through each of them. I've also brought a notebook if there's a particular topic I wanted to brainstorm on as well, the important thing is finding what works for you to keep doing it.
With those 3 things or something similar I've lost 20+ lbs in a few months (or less) on more than one occasion.

You pretty much described my routine to a tee. I subsist on protein shakes, turkey/chicken sandwiches, and occasional snacks, drink during the weekends, and do plenty of walking late at night to clear my head.

Funny -I probably sample some of Tim Ferriss methods -though I can't say for sure because I haven't directly read his material. A lot of these fitness people have similar ideas, some taking it to extreme or claiming they invented something obvious.Transmogrified Tiger wrote: Freed's favorite person Tim Ferriss .
Occassionally I'll do some of the "life hacks" that I think Ferriss is proponent of - boost metabolism with some fasting (like 12 hours between eating), cold showers (I think this works TBH), sneaking a little exercise at work. Other than stress, my busy season is good for my health, because of the regimentation, my convenience food is lots of nuts, protein bars.
There are so many things that work -some of it contradictory to other. Just find what works for yourself, -this finding out is part of the process-involves paying attention, even logging the info. Whatever it is, just need the motivation to see it thru. ...same thing others have said.
