Re: 2014 World Cup
So, I'm in our break room for the better part of the 2nd half of the Mexico/Brazil game. Two of these old cantankerous [expletive] come in and start watching and doing the whole 'oh this is so exciting, I have world cup fever, we almost missed a goal!11! etc). I just said why are you watching it if you think its so boring? They find it interesting, but there exists this need to criticize it by everyone. I just don't get it. [expletive] insecure douchebags.

I don't understand it either. I haven't ever watched soccer during non-WC season, though that might change. But others in this position seem to always want to talk trash (see, this is why I don't like soccer! whenever someone flops, or commenting on how boring it is when someone draws or how boring it is in general). not to mention those who like to point slurs and other insults at the players and fanbases. And that's not even all of it.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:So, I'm in our break room for the better part of the 2nd half of the Mexico/Brazil game. About Dempsey--I couldn't hear the audio at the bar I was at, but how was that high kick to the face not at the very least a yellow? Is it not a foul, or did the ref just miss it?

Re: 2014 World Cup
When two players go after the same ball and contact is inadvertent and equal, it's not a foul. If one player goes for the ball and the other player goes but can't get to the ball and just makes contact with the player, it's a foul. If it's that, and the foul is particularly egregious and no attempt is made to play the ball, it's a yellow card. If it's that, but the intent is to hurt the player, it's a red.RxOfCowbell wrote:About Dempsey--I couldn't hear the audio at the bar I was at, but how was that high kick to the face not at the very least a yellow? That seems subjective? Does the world cup have a review booth in nyc?

That makes sense. So I guess it should have been a regular foul then? Was it?trill wrote:When two players go after the same ball and contact is inadvertent and equal, it's not a foul. I don't understand how people can think Soccer is boring when the NFL/MLB is 90% downtime & commercials & breaks. Hockey, Rugby, and Soccer are some of the most exciting games to watch, IMHO.RxOfCowbell wrote:I don't understand it either. Someone made a good point the other day that many Americans like those breaks because they love statistics. They love looking at the matchups, the percentages, the setup, the execution, and most important...the scoring...and comparing it against previous plays/games/matchups. Soccer/Hockey/Rugby are too free flowing, so they misinterpret it as boring because they don't perceive the "setup" or "build up" of a play...or they hold too much value in high scoring matchups...but to me, the setup of a play in soccer is so much more complex because it is free flowing, so when center midfielder pinpoints a 50 yard pass to his striker's head...that blows me away. It's hard to quantify Soccer/Hockey/Rugby like you can with Baseball/Football/Basketball.
Don't get me wrong, I love watching MLB/NFL/etc as well, but I don't understand the "soccer is boring" argument...just say it doesn't interest you.
As for Dempsey, it was a foul...but the leg kick is just a natural reaction to thinking you're falling backwards...Dempsey's face just got in the way. I doubt it was malicious.

Re: 2014 World Cup
"boring" is just code for "I don't understand the game." People say it about every sport. And it makes them feel better for some reason, idk. Or maybe they don't mean it to be condescending. Actually, yeah, idk what they're trying to accomplish when they say that.

Re: 2014 World Cup
The worst is when people try to explain a sport's "boringness" through reductionism (i.e. "it's just watching a ball go back and forth." Or "it's just watching guys stand around all day and then every once in a while a guy will hit the ball... wow." Or "it's just a bunch of nothing and then something happens for like two seconds.")
It'd be one thing if i only heard this from non-sports fans trying to be pretentious, but it also comes from sports fans trying to be elitist.

It was actually kind of Deuce's fault. He brushed him back with an elbow in mid-air which threw Boye off his trajectory.TimeForGuinness wrote:As for Dempsey, it was a foul...but the leg kick is just a natural reaction to thinking you're falling backwards...Dempsey's face just got in the way.
