Golden handcuffs. I make good money because I have alot of tribal knowledge that is worthless with any other company. In fact the technical skills that got me where I am have eroded to the point where it would be tough to compete with a college grad.

I have no skills is the short answer.

Ahahaha! I'm feeling the same way. I worked in IT sales for VARs for years, but never worked for an actual OEM like SAP, Salesforce.com, Cisco, Microsoft, etc. It's a glass ceiling you need to penetrate at a young age or else you're doomed. I've always felt that most of those guys who repped those companies and changed jobs pretty often got their new jobs just because of their prior employer's logo and not so much based upon how they produced. Nowadays most of those companies require W-2s and you're judged based upon your earnings even though you never had a chance to play in the big boy's world.

This is what happened to me. Although I'm relatively happy with the work I do, I was pigeon-holed early in my career as a specialist - out on the front lines doing the detail work to help win new business. Which was fine by me - rather do that than manage people or deal with office politics. But I'm paying a price at this late career stage as I am in a position where I have to worry about job security, frozen wages, lost bonuses with no chance for upward movement. I'd consider moving on but the job market for folks my age isn't very robust.

Mouths to feed, and fear. I fear if I left I wouldn't be able to make enough to support my family and we'd end up living a very different existence than now. That's really it. If I can turn one of my side ventures into a big enough business and prove that it is reliable, I'd probably do it. Just not there yet. Will it ever get there? Don't know. Keep trying though.

I think my biggest fear is someday having to go look for a job. Who the hell would hire my dumbass? I've only interviewed for a job once in my life. Nailed it and got the job but I don't know. A degree in Meteorology that I haven't used in about 10 years probably doesn't get me much. When you look at my actual work experience, farmer, meteorologist, campaign coordinator, memorialist, builder of farm toys. Not exactly a list that most companies are looking for.

The good news is, I don't see the day any time soon where I need to go find a job. I hear now of friends looking for a job and when they apply they are one of a few hundred applicants. They go through three or four interviews which seems like a huge waste of time on the companies part. I think the whole hiring process by companies is [expletive] up, but that's another topic all together.

So yeah meetings. I will be at the Capitol in Springfield tomorrow for meetings. I'm not looking forward to it.

I think I ranted about it in some other thread, but we still doing it. We have a meeting every day called a WIG huddle. WIG stands for "wildly important goals". Its an extremely fancy name for a 15 minute meeting where we have to report back on our action items for a given project. If we aren't meeting the target dates for our action items, then we are supposed to report back about what "roadblocks" we have.

Saying that the roadblock is I have too many projects and meetings to attend is not an acceptable roadblock to bring up. Niether is saying that you haven't gotten an answer yet from the the supplier/specialist/engineer/manager about a key question. If you say "they said they'd have an answer by Friday" then it is your fault for not screaming at them "No! I need an answer tomorrow!" Basically it always boils down to that the reason you didn't get something done because you are too lazy, unmotivated or you just didn't try hard enough. It's highly motivating to be told this first thing in the morning every day.

One time the project manager asked me if I could run a test on a machine that morning that had been scheduled for the next day. We couldn't wait an extra day! It was one of these mornings that was -20 degrees out, and we would have to be outside for a couple hours to do the work. I told him my roadblock was I forgot to wear my long underwear that day.

Plus, changing jobs puts you at the bottom of the totem pole should layoffs occur down the road.

Egad. That's like a kid's acronym. Like ROUS's in The Princess Bride. I bet they just wanted it to be a word, so they looked for a W word to tack on.
