I trained with a partner, but really alone. We would set our goals for the week, which were flexible if we felt poorly one day, and then we would screen shot the route from our app and send it to each other.

It kept me accountable knowing I had to send a screen print to him that day. It also made me want to train hard so as not to fall behind his times that we had to share with one another. No shying away from the clock...

Combo leaning toward the wing it. I have a general outline of what I want to do, strength/cardio days etc... but I vary what I am going to do based on a variety of things. Right now I'm having a wrist problem, going to lift tomorrow but I really have no idea what I can and can't do. I'll figure something out, do some things that won't aggravate it.

In fact when you are 50 like me pretty much if you don't wing it you won't be doing anything, because every day there is some god damned thing getting in your way. Injury, work, bad night of sleep ... When I was 25 if I had an injury like I have right now with my wrist I would just rest it and go when it gets better. But at my age if you wait for your body to not be injured then you just won't get anything done. Guarantee if I waited for my wrist to heal my shoulder would start acting up, then my elbow, knee ... So I just say [expletive] it, work through what I can, and keep moving.

btw - I have been in Cancun for almost a week and I jogged one time for about 8km. The rest of the time was a slow but successful process of turning my blood into tequila. This will be interesting tomorrow. Glad I don't work so I can go in a little late and kind of take my time.

There's a video floating around the net of a guy who completely snapped his spine in one of those Crossfit competitions the other day. The more I hear about that stuff the more dangerous it sounds. Placing an emphasis on executing lifts against a clock is a recipe for disaster. I know several people who got roped into that cult and ended up getting injured. I'll stick with my slow and steady improvements instead.

I generally roll my own with exercise. Have some resources and experience ( one positive thing about getting older). Also have plenty of races, and group activity to keep myself motivated/humbled. Whatever you do has to fit in with your schedule.

Running -since it's simple - is an excellent personal barometer on physical, and sometimes mental well-being.

Have not heard good things about Crossfit. No personal experience - and at this stage, I am not going to try it. A friend did it, and couldn't stick with it. Crossfit competitions sound really dumb.

Looks like kind of a freak occurrence. I look at it and it looks like he drops the weight behind him and it just bounces up and hits him in the back. Having said that dropping weights in any way doesn't seem smart to me.

Down dog is also excellent. I enjoyed that greatly.

I'm going to a class tomorrow morning. I'm going to go to these every day. They are great, they really are. I just can't recommend these enough.

Not to you in particular, but people need to be careful getting back into game shape. I've seen there guys in the past year really mess up their knee forgetting that they weren't a couple years younger and a couple pounds lighter.

But, that sore feeling after working out....that's awesome.
