Re: Getting into shape
Is there any real benefit to a steam room? My gym has one but I've never tried it.

Steam room definitely. I'm a big believer in those. I started using them regularly years ago in the winter and noticed a drop in colds, although alot of that was just exercising I'm sure as well. I did some research and there is some science behind it - raising the body temperature and more importantly keeping the lining of the nose moist which is where cold viruses settle and take root. I don't believe all that sweat out the toxins crap or lose wait with them stuff, but for reducing colds and relaxing the muscles they work.
I actually won't use the one at the gym now because I have one at home, but if I didn't have one at home I would use the one at the gym.

How long? Depends, 10-20 minutes. I've stayed in too long where I about passed out, so that's probably too long.
Yeah I have a shower that has all sorts of gizmos. 5 shower heads (one above and four on the wall) with two different controls and a gizmo that makes steam. When I first started using it I burnt the [expletive] out of myself. It's like Star Trek mission [expletive] control on the walls with all of the dials and [expletive]. I set it really high - 115 or higher. I also have a hot tub at my house(outdoor). I'm old but still active and therefore hurt all over all of the time, so these things are nice to have in my house. There is nothing that makes me feel like I'm 16 again then two beers, 20 minutes in the hot tub, and a 750mg hit of hyrdocodone. I haven't had my rx filled in over year, I need to go do that. I miss that.
The only thing I use at the health club which I did this morning is the dry heat. In the winter I'll get dressed in there just to warm up, but today I actually sat in there after my workout.

I couldn't do the swim...swimming in open water to exhaustion would freak me out. Not a great swimmer to begin with.

I have the Macklind Mile also on the radar this summer. Thankfully it's net downhill. Frankly, it's the race that I know will hurt the most.

Re: Getting into shape
Has anyone heard of Rich Roll? I read his book awhile back; it was pretty fascinating. At age 40, he was an overweight alcoholic. One day when he couldn't get up a flight of stairs without stopping to catch his breath, he had a vision of his daughter's future wedding without him there and decided to get in shape.
The end result: within a couple of years, he completed an Ultraman triathlon. What is the Ultraman? Day 1: 6.2 mile ocean swim, followed by 90 mile cross-country bike ride with vertical climbs of 6,000 feet; Day 2: 171 mile bike ride with vertical climbs of 4,000 feet; Day 3: 52.4 mile double marathon. A year or two after that, he decided to do 5 Iron Man-length triathlons on 5 Hawaiian islands in 5 days. IIRC, due to some logistical issues it ended up stretching past 5 days, but I think he completed it. Crazy, but inspiring.
