http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... TURES.htmlThe body of a 52-year-old woman who fell to her death in the Pyrenees was devoured by Griffon vultures before emergency services were able to retrieve it.
'When we first went out in the helicopter looking for the body, we saw numerous vultures without realising what they were doing,' he said.
'There were only bones, clothes and shoes left on the ground.
'They took 40 to 50 minutes to eat the body.'

The Waves - deadly hike
I've always have been interested in hike to see the Waves in Utah, but doubtful I'd ever go thru the hassle of permit process.
Apparantly, since it's rock, and no real trail -people get lost in the frickin desert heat.
I typically think of woods as more disorienting for hiking (canyon labrynths notwithstanding) . But after hiking around Cathedral Rock in AZ, I can see how people can get lost in treeless desert fairly easily.
for one, the trail is obscure where it is just rock. Some times you can see faint dry wash that you think is trail, but it is not. And there are pathways that are not on your map, that screw you up.
As a flatland Midwesterner, I was mesmerized by my surroundings and easily distracted from noting more minor landmarks in case I got off trail -which I did. At one point in my hike I followed dry wash that I thought was trail and ended up at this approx 200 ft drop dry waterfall.
Anyway, I couldn't find where I got off the path, which wasn't much on the rock (someone did paint arrows on the rock in places to help). All in all -took me about 15 minutes to get back on track. In my case -I wasn't in any danger,- especially since it wasn't too hot out (spring), and the Cathedral Rock wasn't too far off, and I had good maps that I'd studied. But I could sense how easily the desert could fool you, and be unforgiving.

I didn't get that out of the story at all. Could be true but I understood the cell phone to give them a way to contact rescuers and potential rescuers not the cause of any distress.Freed Roger wrote:That is sad. And excuse me, weird. Death by Extreme cell phone dependency

Yeah, hard to say. I make the assumption that they were overmatched and relied too much on cell phone as their safety device. I do not understand calling for help from sinking vehicle. It is not the river Des Peres they drove into. Time wasted calling rather than fighting for their lives.
