I wouldn't be against that policy really. It would certainly deter cheaters and little douches swearing non stop on Xbox live matches.

Rumors abound that MS is backtracking on its DRM policies due to community backlash. Supposedly no more 24 hour check-in and disc games work the same way the do on the 360.

EDIT: up on their official site now

http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/update
So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

Probably that you need to connect to the internet to set up the console, but after that, you don't. They are also getting rid of something that required the internet: a family account where up to 10 family members could hook up at the same time.

It's amazing how often stuff like this happens with billion dollar decisions. It's like they've never heard of market research or focus groups.

i understand that but it would seem that people without an internet connection cannot use the system at all. if you bought without knowing that the initial set up required a connection would it just be a useless box?

It's a one time setup/download when you first boot up the console. Honestly, I don't think there are too many people in the market for a $500 gaming console that can't find an internet connection.

It sounds like the initial setup could be a day 1 patch to undo the 24 hour check-in requirement. They've probably already started production on the hardware and a firmware update could simply be the most cost-effective way to make changes. Plus whatever OS stuff they may be cramming in at the last moment.
