You may need a NSFW on that first pic.

Re: TV Thread - beware, [expletive] can get spoilery
Decided to finally finish the Sopranos. I quit, not on purpose, after Season 5.
Just finished the last episode last night. I knew about the ambiguous ending and was all prepared to go along with the majority (in my experience) opinion that says he got whacked. I was also more or less hoping for it after all the awful stuff he did in Season 6A/6B. But I came away feeling that it wasn't going to happen. There's a ridiculous amount of blogspace out there devoted to proving that he was killed, but I'm still not convinced. Either way, I think if they purposely don't show you, then you're not supposed to know.

I don't have strong feelings one way or the other, but have you seen this? My hunch is that you have.

I don't know that we "aren't supposed to know", per se, as much as it's not supposed to be the big deal. I think Chase took the moment to put us all into the mind of Tony, to show what it was like to live on the edge, constantly in fear of death. Whether or not he actually got it... I'm not sure Chase cared. Maybe. Possibly.

Yeah, found it after I finished. Wayyy too long, but I see his points and the POV stuff is fairly convincing, except for the show has never been only from Tony's POV. Stuff goes on, even in this episode, that he never knows or finds out about. There are shots in this scene that are strictly from his POV, but not the one where the theoretical gun shot happens. So we should see more than we do, but we don't. I'm inclined to think that's because the curtain was dropped, so to speak, rather than our POV character dying. It's a result of storytelling rather than the story itself. (EDIT - I must have glanced over it before but looks like he actually accounts for that, and it's believable. Damn, it's pretty convincing)JL21 wrote:I don't have strong feelings one way or the other, but have you seen this? My hunch is that you have.

Reading all the theories, I kept thinking back to Breaking Bad Season 3 finale and how confusing that was. There you've got a no-doubt Jonathan Demme style POV and it seems almost certain the POV character is not killed because of Jesse's arm movement. Yet you find out the opposite happened. Gilligan said that was unintentional even before the next season aired, but I would have sworn otherwise.
I loved the FBI agent yelling "We're gonna win this thing!" after Phil was killed.

I think microanalyzing that scene to determine whether or not Tony died is fundamentally misguided. He might have died, or he might not have. Personally, I don't see how him getting whacked makes any sense as he had made peace with New York. But
is how I feel too. Tony was alive, until the series ended with a smash cut to black. And that's it.if they purposely don't show you, then you're not supposed to know.

and as much as that ending pissed me off to no end when it happened, now looking back, it kind of is a great ending to the show.
prob be starting it over now, thanks...hbo on the go is awesome (esp when i don't have to pay for it)

I read at the time that David Chase wanted a REALLY sudden ending--that is, smash to black, then the "coming up next on HBO" promo. Apparently contractual obligations meant that they had to roll credits at the end.
